Oday28 Universal M12 Exhaust manifold question

Have an Oday 28 1985 Anniversary Edition I recently purchased. I am rebuilding the Universal M12 motor. The marine exhaust connects to the boat exhaust with a series of heavy galvanized pipe fittings 3-90 degrees and several nipples. Is this how it was done originally from the factory? It seems and looks unprofessional and very heavy for the four small bolts that hold the exhaust manifold to the engine. Would love to get a picture of how it was done from the factory or a picture of what you are using. I can fabricate something but would like for it to look original.

That is original believe it or not. The flange has 3 bolts not 4, 2 top, one bottom. Not galvanized pipe but black pipe available from plumbing shop or maybe H-D. Dirty replacement job but do it yourself for sure if you are just averagely handy.
