looking to purchase an O'day 240..can someone talk a little about their pointing ability?..I realize i am not buying a race boat,but i want to make sure the boat has reasonable sailing abilities..thanx

240 sails like a pro
Hey Jeff-- The 240 points and sails very well. I have my 240 out in 15-20 all the time (with family). She is quick ( i dont race and i dont intend to) and stable cruiser. I am able to keep up with larger boats, and sail faster than boats my own size. The 135 jib is a big and powerful sail. This is my first summer in my 240 and I have no regrets! Ron

240 is a great boat
The 240 is a great boat. It points extremely well -- if conditions are right you can sail within the tabs on the windex! I had a 88 240 for 14 years before moving up to an O'Day 302. There are times I miss the smaller 240 -- it's very nimble and very responsive (yet forgiving when I first got it and was learning how to sail).

Jeff, I have owned my 240 for 5 years now and find it to be a good sailing boat! I do not race it because I am not off on the weekends they race at my club. Also I am the only 240 on our lake. I have rigged a gin-pole for it and we trailer the boat to different lakes for our summer vacations. I have added some improvements. She sails real well. A few years ago, when I was researching the 240, there was an uncalled for, in my opinion, review of the 240. The title was "a Hunter on steroids" way off the mark. The writer stated that he and a professional sailing instructor could not balance the boat and helm. Not true! I eventually bought the 240, and found that she is as fast as any boat her size, and the she is quite able to point, and to balance the helm so that she sails herself with a rudder lock for several minutes at a time. She is a sweet sailboat. Eric

Sadly, she is for sale. My daughter is going off th college this fall, and her brother is only one year behind her. After they are taken care of, I plan to find another 240 or a 272. I love this line of boats. Say, I havent seen you post here before. Where are you located? Are you on a mooring? I met a couple who have an O'day 240. The name is Day Tripper, and met them at Napatree point last year. Hope to see you around. Eric
