Hi Ihave Just Purchaced A 1972 Oday23 I Was Wondering If Any One Could Tell Me What The Deal With The Sink Is? Does It Have A Holding Tank Or Does It Use Sea Water & If So How? & Where Can I Find A Owners Manual For This Boat If Possible. & Last Do You Need To Have The Center Board Down When Sailing Or Is The Wieght Of The Iron Keel Good For Ballast ?thanks. I can't tell you too much about your particular boat except that it does have a cast iron keel which can rust up and caused an issue with the centerboard getting stuck. All O'Day 23's, prior to 1974 had this issue until the O'Day company realized this problem and started building these boats with lead keels. If the centerboard is stuck inside the keel, I would just go ahead and sail it with the centerboard up. She'll sail very well without the centerboard and her keel will still offer the same good stability needed regardless of whether the centerboard is up or down. Her windward ability would be a little better with the centerboard down, but most of the O'Day 22's didn't have centerboards, and they were and still are, a very popular boat today. The sink should probably have two hoses. One hose comes from a small holding tank to a pump type faucet, and the other hose from the drain at the bottom of the sink to a through-hull fitting somewhere on the hull. The previous owner may have changed the plumbing around, but the only way to find out is to open up some compartments and follow the hoses to see where they lead. You may be able to buy a copy of the owner's manual for this boat either at this site, or the "I Love O'Days" web site. These boats have a nice interior. I like the way the galley is set up on the Port side along with the dinette on the starboard side. One of our YC members owned a 1973 O'Day 23, and he really loved this boat. It may have a keel issue, but other O'Days like my 222, and even the larger O'Day sailboats have rudder issues. In spite of all this, they're still nice boats. The best of luck to you Ron!

I have a copy of the owners manual for that vintage 23, but it says zip about the sink! I'm not sure if Rudy at D&R would have a manual, but even if he doesn't..he will have more info than any manual would list! My manual is for the pop-top 23, but except for the pop-top, the 2 versions of the 1970-72 23 were the same (well ,the non-pop-top had a hinged mast instead of the pop-top's thru-deck stepped mast).
The sink drain for those early 23s was lead to a thru-hull and the drain for the icebox was tee'd into the hose as well.
As Joe says, the CB should be lowered for sailing, but you will be able to sail without the CB if it is stuck. The keel is cast-iron the Cb is hollow fiberglass with 20# of lead flashing inside for ballast.
