Sorry to hear about your situation, but I've been going down the search for the last title owner road since Thanksgiving weekend. Bought the boat from a guy who had it in his yard when he bought the house from a widow three years ago. The boat was last registered 6/81, by the now dead man.I live in N.J. and the DMV is not very helpful, the info that I received came from the State Police who have been helpful and have agreed to inspect my boat and send me on my way.If you go in any direction I would try the state police marine division, and good luck. Tax dollars at work.

I had similar experience in Ohio. I moved from Vermont, where rowboats and canoes are not registered!(I love Vermont!) Ohio registers EVERYTHING (Taxes!). So, I show up with a used Old Town, no registration, no title and received conflicting non-helpful stories from Ohio BMV, Ohio Watercraft Division, Coast Guard Auxillary, County Registrar, etc. Finally found an "mature" licensed Ohio boat dealer who informed me that he could simply create a magical obscure affadavit of ownership if I raised my right hand and swore to him that it really was my boat! Seriously! He gave me the paper, charged me $1.50 fee and I was off to the BMV to register my canoe. Seems it happens all the time to dealers--people trade old boats, etc. without paperwork, so there has to be a mechanism to create a new regis/title. So, my advice, keep asking-where there is a will, there is a way. Also, consider registration in Vermont, if you know someone who has address there, as the folks in Vermont are truly helpful in these types of situations, although you might have to go to Montpelier to get it done. Yet another going through the same process

I am in the middle of the same process. Just bought an Oday 20. It was in Michagan, I'm in North Carolina, and we met in Pittsburgh to do the deal! The boat didn't have a title and the trailer didn't require one since the boat was under 2,500 lbs. I did alot of calling before I purchased the boat. I just typed up a Bill of Sale, had the seller sign and notarize it. In NC, I take that to the NC Wildlife to register the boat and make a new title. If you want to try the Bill of Sale route I got a template from the NC Wildlife division it's generic enough you could probably use it for your state. You can change the language as appropriate - All they care about are hull numbers, vin numbers, basic description, etc. The template can be found at https://www.ncwildlife.org/pg01_License/pg1c2_c.htm I just looked at the content and retyped and change the verbage to include the trailer as well as the boat.
