Winches only move in one direction
The whole point of a winch is that it will only turn in one direction. This allows for someone to get a mechanical advantage in hauling in lines. Winches should turn freely clockwise, making clear, sharp clicking noises; they should not turn at all counterclockwise. If your winch turns counterclockwise as well as clockwise, you have a useless piece of equipment. Fortunately, one-speed standard (non-self tailing) winches such as on an Oday 22 are easy to fix. Get yourself some acetone to clean the parts completely, some light machine oil (Three-in-one is fine) to lubricate the springs and pawls, and some winch grease. For complete instructions on how to service your winch, check with the manufacturer and check the archives of this site for much good advice. I did so before servicing my winches for the first time a few years ago, and learned everything I needed to know.

Clarification
Just to clarify, with the winch handel insterted in the winch should you be able to move the handel backwards. I have sailed on other boats and the crank will move freely backwards to get a better position to crank in. I understand that the winch itself should only move in on direction. Thanks, Rob

Like stated above " I have sailed on other boats and the crank will move freely backwards to get a better position to crank in." I guess the winches on this boat DO NOT move backwards to get a better position to crank it in. Where could i get some that will. It is a pain in the neck! Thank you for your responces

Winch
I don't know what brand of winch you like, but for economy the Forespar Marelon winch, at the link below, is available from sailnet. I have done quite a bit of business with them and find them to be a good vendor. I you prefer a metal body winch they also have an Anderson #6 for under a $100. Both of these winches will work the way you want. God Bless and good luck.
