Oday Spreader Repair

Has anyone been able to find a replacement spreader and rubber stay for an Oday Day Sailer? It's a 1982, and one of the tube aluminum spreaders broke at the connection to the mast fitting (see photo), and the rubber piece at the shroud end of the spreader cracked. Photo 1's a bit out of focus but the fitting and broken end of the spreader is visible. Photo 2 shows the intact rubber stay that fits over the end of the spreader (does this part have a specific name?) and the intact port side spreader.

Anyway, the Dorothy C's an oldie but goodie and I intend to fix her but having a heck of a time finding the parts. Any experiences or words of wisdom?

The name is a Spreader BOOT, and they are 'berry, berry' expensive, in the $30ish range each last time I checked. Try to use the ones you have if at all possible. You will wrap it with twine when done.
It is possible that Rudy at D&R Marine has the spreader, if not you may have to get inventive! His number is 508 644-3001.

Rudy may have a replacement spreader for your mast.
http://www.drmarine.com/ As for the spreader boots, you could always make them out of leather like I did. I'm not into leather craft myself, but I bought the punches to make the holes, plus the leather which can be bought at a craft store or an Indian Pow Wow. I used a folded piece of paper to draw out the boot pattern by laying the paper over the wire in the spreader and drawing it out. I cut out the pattern and transferred it over to the leather. Then I used whipping twine to hold it in place. I've gotten about three years out of my leather boots and they're still in great condition.

Hey Jack,
If I can do it, you can do it. That was the first time I've ever worked with leather. I also made a mountain man type knife case for my "Nessmuk" knife. I have two Bowie Knives that need cases with fringe on them that I haven't gotten around to making, but I'll get to it some day.

Rudy at D&R Definitely has the spreader, because I bought one from him when my DS II needed one!
I too like Joe's leather spreader boots (and intend to make a pair for my DS II), but you really don't need fancy spreader boots on a Day Sailer. Right now, I have a simple plastic cap (basically a cap for a chair leg) fitted to the spreader ends, I notched them to fit. These are secured by a wrap of self-stick tape, the kind that stretches and only sticks to itself. This tape is also called "self-amalgamating" or seal tape. It is very thin rubber, and you actually could wrap it around those rubber boots that are on the spreaders now, they don't look that bad in the pics.

If you could use an Owners Manual/Rigging guide, let me know, I have created an expanded version of the DS II instruction sheet with help from D&R Marine.

For years, I didn't have spreader boots on my spreaders. All I did was wrap rigging tape on them and that's it.

If you have an electrician buddy you may be able to do the same thing with the type of plastic heat shrink they use on the main connection up the pole. it would not be too hard to cut a slit in one side and slip it over. It would be very smooth fit tightly and be water proof as well.

Like Jack mentioned, Jeff, Rudy might possibly have the spreader in stock and those rubber spreader boots are pricey. You have the option of making your own spreader boots out of leather as I did. I never worked with leather and I was able to do it. Just make a pattern out of a folded paper that will resemble the boot, and trace it on to the leather. Punch out the holes for the whipping twine, and that's it. I made mine about three years ago, and they're just as good today as the day that I made them.
