Oday Mariner rudder: cotter pin needed?

Oday 1971 Mariner 19 2+2 Lake Nockamixon, PA
My 70' Mariner 19 came with the original mahogany rudder.
I'm surprized that there's no cotter pin to keep the rudder in place during a knock down.
Should I be concerned about losing the rudder?
Do any of you Mariner sailors have your rudder secured better?

I don't own a Mariner but my O'Day 222 came with a cotter pin on a small string and I use it because my tip up rudder hangs low, and it could un-ship from the gudgeons and get lost if it grounds out. My advice to anyone is to get a cotter pin, hang it on a small string and use it when the rudder is hooked up. Also, if your pintle doesn't have a hole, I'd drill one or install a metal stop above the pintle. Rudders are big bucks and you don't want to take a chance in losing one.

I lost the rudder on an O'day '23. I was moored close to shore and the tide went out (about 8 feet around here). The rudder lifted out and floated away.

I now have two cottter pins- one in each pintle. Hopefully that won't happen again.

I'm wondering what kid of metal stop I could use. Maybe a small vice grip?
The pintel is not very big. I guess I could attempt to drill a hole.

Check out this site: http://www.rigrite.com/ What you are looking for are "Rudder Stops." The stop is attached to the transom above the gudgeon. They don't show a picture of it but it is under "Rudder Hardware" on this site. You may find another site that has illustrations of this. You also may be able to Mickey Mouse something that will work for you.

my oday 20 has a flat piece of thin stainless steel about 1/2" wide attached to the back of the rudder below the top pintel. the plate is attached at the bottom and forms a kind of upside down L shaped spring with the short free end facing the rudder and sitting just below the gudgeon. if the rudder starts to lift the top of the spring hits the gudgeon to hold it. to remove the rudder i have to push the spring in toward the rudder to get past the gudgeon. this would probably only work if you have enough space between the rudder pintels and transom. (hard to explain i hope you can follow this)

The type of rudder stop that you have explained, is the type that I've seen on some boat rudders.
