We are looking to buy a sailboat, over 30 ft. for cruising around Cape Cod... over the past few months we have been looking at a number of different boats and yesterday we saw a very clean O'Day 322. We fell in love with the interior of this boat. We are a husband/wife with a 9 year old daughter and she loved what she called "her bedroom" (the private cabin that sort of runs under the cockpit). We liked having another private cabin like the 322 does, something we don't have to make up every night... My question... are the other O'Days (say the 32, 34, 35) set up in a similar way? Susan

Take A Look at the OD32

The OD 32 CC (centre cockpit), has a completely seperate cabin aft of the cockpit (as does its bigger sister the OD37). The OD34 has a quarter berth below the cockpit, not a seperate sleeping area, but part of the salon. The 32 and 35 I believe is also setup this way. If you go to http://home.att.net/~oday/, you can view dimensions, photos and some original sales brochures to get a better idea of cabin layouts. I personally like the OD32 /37 CC, as I have children also and a seperate space for them would be ideal for me also. Hope this helps, and let us know what you decide to buy. Incidentally, I like that 322 also. Take care. Don

I keep forgetting about the great information right here at this site (sorry Phil and Justin). Go to the link on the homepage for the various model overviews. Don

Sorry the first attempt didn't make the trip...We, too are impressed with the older O'Day 32/cc. It is a well sought out boat. This past summer we traveled as far away as New Orleans to see them (aren't many out there). We are still impressed with the design and the useable room. However, take a good look at the decks and lamination problems they seemed to have. On each boat that we saw there appeared to be a "core" problem and that can get expensive. We did find one down in Cocoa, FLA, at Whitely Marine that was a "hurricane boat". The present owner was repairing it and doing a great job! Good luck in your search... If you find a good one, I'm jealous!!

LOVE MY 322

WE OWN AN 0'DAY 322. OUR FAMILY CONSISTS OF TWO BOYS, 11 AND 8. THEY ARE OF THE LARGER SIZE (THE 11 YEAR OLD WEARS A 10.5 SHOE!) SO WE NEED ROOM IN A BOAT. THE BOYS LOVE THE V BERTH WITH THE FOLD AWAY BULKHEAD. THEY USE IT FOR PRIVACY, PLAY TAG WITH IT OPEN (A REAL PLEASURE TO A DAD UNDER SAIL!) AND REALY ENJOY THE LAYOUT. THE DECK AS AMPLE ROOM TO MOVE ABOUT AND THE PLACEMENT OF WINCHES AND CONTROLS WE HAVE MAKE IT AN EASE FOR DAD TO SAIL THE BOAT SINGLEHANDED IF MOM IS BUSY TAKING CARE OF OTHER ISSUES. WE HAVE CHARTERED MANY TIMES AND ALWAYS COME BACK TO A FOND APPRECIATION OF OUR BOAT. WE RACE AND CRUISE AND COULD NOT ASK FOR A BETTER ALL AROUND UTILITY BOAT AS THE O'DAY. THERE IS A JAPANESE FELLA THAT HAS PURCHASED THE MOLDS AND IS STARTING TO PRODUCE THE BOAT AGAIN. HE CAN BE FOUND AT O'DAY@OAL.COM . I THINK PRECISION BOATS HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT. THING IS, THE 322 IS IN GREAT SHAPE FOR IT'S YEARS AND I WOULD RATHER GET IT FOR THE GOING PRICE NOW RATHER THAN PURCHASE A NEW ONE WITH THE SAME DESIGN AND GADGETS AS THE 89. LOOK AROUND, PRICE THE FOOTAGE, IT'S A GREAT BOAT.

ODay space

I have a 1986 ODay 35. I originally looked at a 322 but for basically the same price the 35 provides significantly more interior space. The 35 is based on the 34 design but they extended the transom and added a swim platform by scooping it out. This is a great convenience for boarding the boat from a dinghy when at anchor. It's also great for scuba diving and just swimming. I'm real happy with the quality but wish the engine had a few more horsepower (its a 21 horse Universal deisel).

Next Larger O'Day with similar Layout!

If the same interior layout is really that important to you, the next one up in the series with that particular layout is the O'Day 40. A heck of a big boat with a substantially larger price tag to match and more boat, means more maintenance and sometimes requiring additional crew. It's your call but think about what your sailing plans are. Do you plan on having lots of guests? Will you have additional crew and how long and far do you plan to travel? Even with today's newer layouts and hull shapes, its hard to find anything that comes close to the O'Day 302, 322 and 40 for interior volume and sailing comfort in their respective sizes. Again, ask yourself what your sailing plans are, write your responses down and you will know what is best for you. Sometimes bigger is not better. Check out Sailnet.com for advise as well. Good Luck! Rick
