Just to add on to what Joe and Mad Dog have said, a swing keel for a beginner just might be a real plus. I am not sure if you will be sailing in tidal waters, but you might want to consider 1. where you will be mooring/docking your boat and 2. just how deep the waters are where you will be sailing. I do remember as a beginner, who was not all the familiar with the waters where I was sailing, that on several of memoral occasions (emphasis on memoral) it was really nice to be able to pull that board up and get myself out of a tight spot. It is true however, that there is IMO, a bit of a trade off on how close the boat will point, but as far as I am concerened, the center board boats are very forgiving. The important thing is find one you like and will be comfortable with, and have fun.
