not fixed keel, but price is great

Owner is Rod Geant ( gant) . He is a breaker, and has parts for a number of Odays, Catalinas, Venture 24s, and other boats. He's small, is just starting out , and is 1/3 - 1/2 the price of new. Has hatch covers, interior parts, deck hardware, masts, booms, etc. Also has an entire Oday 25 RIGHT NOW ( 6.6.12) for $1200 - deck is good, needs bottom paint.
This would be a shame to chop up, but the owner has to cover his costs. I have the same model, and can say that it is easier to trailer.

I don't think you're going to see a big difference in price between the CB and fixed keel models. These boats are generally older and their depreciated value is probably pretty equal. That said, the overall boat condition is probably a bigger driver of the going price. As for being a beginner, sure you have another moving part to think about, but IMO as a beginner, you have a bigger margin of error if you find yourself in shoal waters - just pull the board up.rocky97 said:

If you're sailing along and you hear the centerboard dragging the ground, you'll know right then and there that you're in shallow water and you have enough time to turn out of there. Once you hit ground with a keel boat it may be too late and if the tide is falling, every minute you spend trying to back out of there is crucial.
One advantage of the keel/centerboard sloop is that they can be trailered and this can save you a lot of money each year not to mention that if a serious storm is on the way to your area, you can pull your boat out of the water and not have to depend on a boat hauler.
If you are still serious about buying an O'Day full keel sloop, I would go for an O'Day 28 with an inboard diesel myself.

Just to add on to what Joe and Mad Dog have said, a swing keel for a beginner just might be a real plus. I am not sure if you will be sailing in tidal waters, but you might want to consider 1. where you will be mooring/docking your boat and 2. just how deep the waters are where you will be sailing. I do remember as a beginner, who was not all the familiar with the waters where I was sailing, that on several of memoral occasions (emphasis on memoral) it was really nice to be able to pull that board up and get myself out of a tight spot. It is true however, that there is IMO, a bit of a trade off on how close the boat will point, but as far as I am concerened, the center board boats are very forgiving. The important thing is find one you like and will be comfortable with, and have fun.

What area are you? I am in Mass and my friend has an ODay 272 for sale. It is a 1986 with a wing keel, drafts 2'11". It has an outboard with electric start and power tilt (newer Mercury 9.9). He is looking for around $10K.

New mainesail and stack pack this year. Pressure water, shore power. He just replaced all of the head plumbing two weeks ago.

A centerboard is not maintenance free, but it's probably not as difficult to work on as a swing keel. Pins, wedges, plates and pendent all need to be checked and in proper working order. These are not hard to work on, as long as you can get to the bottom of the keel.

We're finally back on the water and we've been going on three day cruises every week to Prudence Island near Bristol RI. My engine is running beautiful and I'm very satisfied with the work that this guy did on it.
Now my Standard Voyager Horizon VHF radio is on the fritz and I hate to part with it.
I bought it at Bliss Marine in 1987 and paid $300 for it. It was state of the art back then and as far as I'm concerned, it still is. The volume potentiometer is going bad on it. I brought it to a radio guy and he can't get the part for it. I also emailed a techy at Standard and he as much as told me the same thing. The pot is sealed and I couldn't get any cleaner inside of it, so just this morning I took it apart and used my Dremel Tool with a cutting wheel to cut the outer potentiometer casing. I sprayed some pot cleaner into it and it seems to work a little better than it did. I sealed the casing back up with a tiny piece of duct tape and added some liquid tape over it. I emailed the Techy and told him that I was going to do this. He replied and said, "That sounds like a plan, let me know how you made out."
Usually, if I turn the squelch down, I can get the squelch sound to come out of the speaker if I set the volume at a certain point. I think the wiper is not making contact on most of the resister. I told the guy that I was pretty good at Mickey Mousing.
I'm going to stick it back in the boat and use it for the rest of the season. Next year I'll spring for a new Standard VHF.
It's always something George! I hope that your summer has been great. Mine wasn't the best but I'm making up for lost time right now.

Don't feel bad Matt. My wife never agrees with me on anything. That's why I take the dog with me on all my cruises. The best thing about a dog is, they never give you any s*&t.
I agree with comments on the CB version. I've had the O'Day 222 and the O'Day 25 and both have easy to use centerboards. I would note that boats like the Catalina 25 have a heavier swing keel since that is where all the ballast is for the boat. So you have to use a crank to get it up and down. In contrast, the O'Day's have a stubby keel filled with lead for the ballast so the centerboard is much lighter and is easy to manage with just a rope pennant located in the cockpit. You also can easily launch from a ramp rather than having to find a place with a crane, or at least a steep launch ramp.
