On my newly acquired O’Day 322, my surveyor and I found some water stains in the cabin due to water intrusion through the genoa tracks. After doing the job, here are some lessons learned that I thought I’d share. First, I was surprised to find the real reason for the leakage was loose bolts, which alloed dirt to accumulate under the tracks and thereby compromise the seal. Second, there is some cabin disassembly required to access two of the bolts. On the starboard side, I had to disassemble part of the galley cabinet to get to the forward-most bolt; tedious, but straightforward. On the port side, I had to unmount the head cabinet to get to the bolt near the forward head bulkhead - again, tedious, but straightforward. After cleaning the deck under the track, the underside of the track, and it’s rubber-like gasket, I used a small amount of 3-M 4200 sealant around each hole. I snugged it up, but not so much as to squeeze it all out. After allowing a couple of days for the sealant to cure, I then did the final tightening. By the way, I found that several of the bolts had a slight bend in them, probably caused by not being tight enough. None were so bad that I had to replace them, but it just shows the need to ensure that they’re always tight. And they’re not all the same length, so you need to keep track of where each size goes. Also I had to be careful to make sure that the innermost washers (not referring to the lock-washers, but to the standard type washer that touches the underside of the deck) were installed on each bolt, because most stayed in place when I removed the bolt, but some didn’t, or fell out later. The reason I mention this is because on many of the holes there isn’t enough space to look into the hole - you’ll need a small hand-mirror to see up into many. The biggest takeaway from all this - checking the tightness of genoa track bolts should be an annual job. This may eliminate the need for any rebidding for a very long time. Good luck with yours!
