We are going to upsize this summer from a CAT22 to somewhere in the 27 30 foot range. I saw two ads for an Oday28 and an Oday280. Can anyone tell me the differneces between the two. We are looking for a boat we can weekend on comfortably while sailing and cooking.

How many of you are there?

I'm in Corpus Christi and I have a 9174 O'Day 27 which is great for weekending. The 28 is slightly larger. Mine will sleep 4 adults and 2 kids. They changed the layout about 75 or 76 but either boat should be great for a couple with kids or even 2 couples. I don't know the difference between the 28 and the 280, but the 272 had the rudder hung off the stern where the 27's rudder is built in. The 270's I've seen all used outboard motors but I don't know if this applies to all 272. Most 27's had inboards. I believe the 272s had a different gel coat color scheme. Hope this helps. Jim

O'day 28 is bigger than the 280

From the specifications. pages at this website: O'day 28 LOA 28'3" Beam 10'3" Disp. 7300 lbs O'day 280 LOA 26'11" Beam 9' Disp 5375 lbs. Interior volume being a cubic function, don't underestimate how much difference 1 foot of beam can make.

PICK AN O'DAY 28

Although I am not familiar with the O'Day 280, I suspect it was a late model production boat similar to the O'Day 272 which does not compare favorably with the earlier O'Day 27. Just prior to shutting down production, Lear Siegler began manufacturing O'Day sailboats (like the O'Day 272), where they cut corners (i.e., carpeted overheards, etc.). If that is the case with the 280, and you want a good heavy well constructed hull, I would definitely recommend the O'Day 28. If you check the classifieds for prices you will most likely find late model O'Day 28's (i.e., 1983-86) priced considerable higher than the O'Day 280. If anyone out there knows differently, I would also like to know! Regards, Bruce C.

Further Comment on the 280

Another possibility is that the so-called O'Day 280 may actually have been built by a company that purchased one or more of the O'Day molds as well as the right to manufacture using the O'Day name. I note a couple of owner reviews of the boat indicate a model year of 1990 and one a 1983 model year. Lear Siegler (produced O'Days following Banga Punta) was not manufacturing O'Days as late as 1990, and I would be most surprised if you could find a 1983 model year O'Day 280.

280 vs 28

I own the 28 OD myself. I have not seen the 280 but as I understand it the 28 is a larger and very different boat. My 28 is as comfortable as many 30 footers I've been on and sails like a dream. The salon is huge by 28 foot standards and the boat can be tricked out to whatever level of gadgets you want to add and can afford. That said most of the 28 foot fleet is aging compared to the 280's. So if you are looking for a newer boat the 280 may be for you. If you don't mind a few years under her hull and a very traditional vessel then I recommend the 28. We usually have 2 people on board but have weekended with as many as five fairly comfortably. For a week or longer any boat under 34 feet will tend to be a bit cramped what with food, drinks and luggage needs. Whatever boat you choose enjoy the time with your family and friends. It is the best! Mike
