oday 28 teak

I just purchased an Oday 28 which in need of a few minor repairs. The teak & holly floorboards had been varnished and need stripping and refinishing. Once I strip off the old varnish, is it better to re-varnish or just coat with teak oil. The sole on my previous boat (Hunter 23) was not varnished, however the wood darkened considerably in time.Question #2 - The starboard exterior handrail on the cabin top needs to be replaced. Where can I get one and how do I get the old one off. It's the straight board style, not the style that has handgrips. It appears that the screw holes were covered with dowels.Thanks in advance.

I would be refinish the floor with a matte finish polyurethane product. Should not be slick but will still protect the sole. You don't want to have to sand too often or you risk going through the veneer.As far as removing the handrails start by drill a small pilot hole into the plug. Then screw a woodsrew into the hole. Look inside first

Before you try the drill and screw technique, look inside the cabin to see if there are plugs in the ceiling which correspinde the screws the the handrail. My handrail bolts through the deck and has a nut the tightens from the inside through a hole just big enough for a socket. Then a plastic cover snaps into the hole to cover it. If you don't have access, they use Justin's suggestion. I tried the same thing on other rails without access, and it worked on some but not others. Many of the plugs had been glued in place, and I had to drill a small hole and then nibble the plug it out with the drill bit. Don't use a bit the size of the plug like I did initially. You are likely to hit the head of the screw and chew up the slot, and then you have yourself a big problem.Brad A.
