O’day 28 stupid question: what is this??

Folks on my O’day 28 the bow has this hole in it. I don’t know what it is. Pictures of others seem to have the same hole. The answer is probably obvious but I don’t know what it is...

Please forgive the previous-owner-bump-the-dock-and-then-do-lousy-gelcoat repairs. I am in process fixing those with current-owner-marginally-better repairs.

While I love stupid questions, for the life of me there seems to be no reason for that hole right there.

Can you see it from the interior?

Put a cork in it? :)

Seen lots of them, know exactly what it is :p.

It's an automatic rinse and drain hole for your anchor rode. Hit a wave head on, fill cycle. Smooth water, drain cycle. Sparkling clean anchor and rode. A whole lot more costly but well worth every penny of it .

However, on a more boring note, why not just put the drain hole on the side of the hull and forget the fill cycle. A lower one to drain the locker and an upper one in the event the lower gets sealed with rode or crud.

I don’t think that location is all that uncommon In that size range. Our Ericsson 28+ was in the same place.

My 30 Oday 1983 has the same. Its the Anchor Locker Drain. Don't put a cork in it. Unless you want to have a foot bath or use it as a baitwell. But as they say, "Its your boat"

Definitely the chain locker drain. It can get plugged but easy to clean out as the connecting tube is short.

Looks as if the hose inside is smaller than the hole in the bow. Is that possible to let water into the boat, or is it sealed?

Good call. From what I remember ours had what looked like a grommet on the outside. I wonder if the impacts that did the gelcoat damage also broke some part of the fitting off.

Test it once in a while (hose with jet of water) to be sure it is draining right. It is fed by a pvc tube as I recall, but can get plugged or have the hose clamps fail, get loose etc. If you are in salt water, you should rinse the anchor and this the compartment anyway to ease risk of corrosion.

@loneshark64: Did you look into wether or not the front of that drain hole is supposed to have a cap, as like a thru hull? I checked mine today and it looks just like yours.
