I have an )28 and need to repack my stuffing box. I wasnt to order the packing in advance and have been advised that Dura Max Ultra-X is very good and easy to work with. Can anyone advise me what size I need to order. AS you may know, access is very difficult and I don't want to have to make multiple trips thru the cockpit locker to take it apart and repack. Any tips would be great.
Thanks

Denise - thanks for the advice but I have heard that the drip-less seal can cause overheating. Still need to know what diameter of seal (Dura Max Ultra-X) to purchase for a 1" shaft. My best guess right now is 3/16". Can anyone confirm.

With a 1" shaft it is most likely 3/16" but on 1800 of our C34s some, not most, just some use 1/4. I know it's tight to get to your box, but you could spend some time measuring it. If not, buy both 1/4 and 3/16. I bought 3 feet of 3/16 two weeks ago and it cost $16 plus s/h.

Just an update to this. Last weekend I got my son to crawl into the bilge thru the port deck locker. I first removed the shelf and vertical retainer in the deck locker, which gave him better access to the Stuffing Box I was totally prepared with PBBlaster, a pick to remove the old flax, pre-cut Dura-MaxX Ultra, and a short piece of PCV cut to use to seat the new packing. Since my boat is in fresh water, the stuffing box nuts came off fairly easy using 2 large pipe wrenches, although access was tight. My son use the pick to remove only a single ring of old packing (surprised that there weren't more). The PVC worked great to seat the new rings (replaced with 3) and everything went back together fine. Now we are waiting for splash for final adjustments. Have to say that the hints and pics posted on this website were invaluable in getting this job done quickly and easily. THANKS!!

What did you do about the flax size?

I ordered the 3/16" and it was perfect. After I cut the ends at a 45*, I dipped into a little pool of molten candle wax to keep them from unraveling until I got them installed. Just a thin layer. Seemed to work well.
