ODay 28 shroud tension

I have recently acquired an ODay 28 and am unable to find recommended shroud tensions. I've recently checked the shrouds using a Loos gauge and belive the tensions are too low and not in the right proportions - the uppers seem too low. The data areforward uppers - about 280 lbs each), (rear uppers that pass over spreaders - 380 lbs each), rear lowers to mast mid-point - 410 lbs each). The split backstay wires are about 360 lbs each.Does anyone have suggestions?

Let me check

Is the information you want for a 28 O'day or a 280 O'day. Your post says that you have a 28 but the relevant information indicates you want to know about a 280. I am pretty sure that they are different. Let us know and we can help I'm sure.Regards,Mike

Mike:Thanks for your response.I must have clicked on the wrong designator button - my boat is a 1987 ODay 28.There's one other error - I didn't clearly recall the shroud arrangement. My boat has one shroud on each side that runs over the end of the spreader and thance to the mast top. Two other shrouds on each side run directle upward to the middle of the mast, about where the spreaders exit.Tentatively , I've set up the shrouds as follows: (1) shrouds to the mast top - about 500 lbs. each, the four mid-mast shrouds at about 400 lbs. each, the backstay at 800 lbs calculated as the force straignt down the stay itself.

I recently acquired the Punta Marine manual for the OD 28 which describes in some detail how to set the tension on standing rigging relative to spar (mast) shape.If you are listed on the O'day owners list then I can send you the the pages from the manual as an attachment. If you are listed on the owners site then you don't have to reveal your e-mail address to the world but can still be contacted by others on this forum.If you aren't out on the site by boat name then get listed and I will send you the page(s) you need for rigging your boat. most riggers recommend 15/25% of the working load of the stay/shroud material used, but if boat is upgraded to a heavier material, the original stay working load should be used, even if new stays are heavier since the mounting hardware were based on the lighter working load.
