ahh, the question I never thought I'd ask. My OMC saildrive died last year and I put a 9.9 hp outboard on the transom to get me through. It worked, but the 9.9 barely got me moving through the water and in a chop I crawled. Also, in a following sea, mostly due to stinkpot wakes on teh stern quarter, the motor cavitated way too much for me. I want to move up to a 15 hp. My question for those of you who have an outboard on your 28 ....what type of outboard do you have and what type motormount do you have holding the motor?? I am planning on getting a new Yamaha 15 hp 2 stroke (to save weight)long shaft and a new motor mount that will lower the motor deeper intio the water. Thanks Mike C. O'28 "Da Capo"

Outboard

Mike, Check the archives. Last year much talk about this. Mounts and motor. I remember Flyhop was one who did it. I know that you need one with about 15" travel and a wedge or Garelick bracket to mount it to. I will look up the numbers i used. Never had a problem with motor coming out of water. I have a Honda 9.8 and have no problem pushing boat to hull speed or over.

outboard bracket for 28

Mike I donot have 28 but I just went through doing the research for changing out the outboard my 222. Like you I was concerned about not being able to puch the boat in a current so in my case I went for the Honda 9.9 long shaft. I also whent with the Garelick 7091 motor mount which gives you 15 inches of travel vs the 7090 wich is 9 inches. That will put you r shaft in deeper so it will not be as likely to come out of the water. I hope this helps.

Outboard power

Mike - I don't have an outboard on my O27, and never want to get involved with one for aux. power after sailing on a friend's boat that was so equipped. It was an older boat, with long overhangs, so was a lot more vunerable than your O28 to having the motor cavitate when the boat was pitching or when someone went up to the bow to pick up a mooring, but the experience left me with a firm prejudice against OB power for bigger boats. That said, you'll get better results if you find an OB that was designed for an aux. power application, rather than a general purpose motor. The purpose built models have more reduction gearing and turn a larger diameter prop at lower speeds, which will provide more thrust. An additional benefit is that they have alternators ( small output, but better than nothing) That was where the old Seagull motors really shone: they had a lot of gear reduction and turned a fairly large wheel, so would move a pretty big boat with very little HP.

thanks all

Thanks for all your sugestions. I'm getting the garelick mount for my outboard. A Yamaha 15hp long shaft with electric start and gear/throttle shifter in cockpit. I am ONLY keeping the outboard for a year. Next year I am installing a new Diesel saildrive. Then I can either sell the outboard OR buy a kickass Zodiac to put it on : )
