I just replaced the standing rigging on my '81 and I'm worried about the forward lower attachment. Using a Loos guage I tensioned all lowers to about 9% to start with (haven't sailed yet). The problem is that I can feel a slight bulge in the deck where the forward lower on the port side attaches (no chain plate on these). You can't really see it but if you run your hand around it you can feel it. I don't know if it was like this before or not. Anyone have any experience with this? Is this normal? It's gotta be a plate glassed into the deck, and I'd sure hate to see it rip through. I did drop the tension down to about 6% but didn't notice much change, and I'm sure it's gonna be too loose to sail. The deck overall seems solid but still...

Can see mine too.

Matt, When I run some water over the deck in this area of my 28 I can see the outline of the plate. I keep a fairly tight rig and have not noticed any change in the outline in the 6 years we've had her. It seems like they could have at least put the plate completly under the bottom of the deck for extra strength. I have enough tension on it so that there is no mast pump at the spreaders when beating to weather. PM

Thanks Paul

I appreciate the response. It's good to hear that someone else sees the same thing. I was afraid the deck had lost some strength over the years. I agree with you about glassing it in. Seems it would be stronger with the plate on the bottom of the deck, plus one might be able to replace it with a bigger plate if the deck got flaky. Oh well, so far so good.
