Oday 272 vs. 272LE - ??

Can anyone shed some light on the 272 vs. 272LE model differences ? I have looked at the specs on both of them at this site, and I cannot see any difference. I am in the market for a boat in the 27-29 foot range, and the 272LE looks like a good contender. But...I see both models for sale, and do not know what the difference is.....any info would be appreciated.

272 v LE

The 272 LE was an upgraded version of the 272 that came with a number of options as standard including wheel steering and an inboard. Many standard model 272's have been upgrade to include most of the 272 LE features. You should compare specs for the particular boat you're looking at. If the specs and equipment are similar than there is not substantive difference between the boats.Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Drawbacks of 272

I had a 272 (regular, with OB motor) and didn't particularly like it (and that's after moving up from a 23). The wing keel presents a few problems: boat slips sideways while pointing, and with the ballast that high up, the boat bobs around a lot every time you move around on the boat. I have a friend with an S2 27 footer, same weight but a fin keel, that hardly moves when you step on it. Mine also had blisters all over the bottom, and always floated bow-down, even with bone-dry bilges and tanks. This caused water to always collect in the front of the cockpit.On the positive side, it does have tons of room inside, a huge quarter berth, and the built in swim ladder was nice too.If it were me, I'd prefer the ODay 26 footer -- better looking boat and with that shoal keel/centerboard combo (same configuration my Oday 23 had), I expect it would sail much better. But if you're getting a deal....say 7-9 grand, it might be worth overlooking the shortcomings.

I love my 272LE...

As usual, Justin is Johnny-on-the-spot with the good info. His is sound advice.With regard to Mark's comments, hull blisters are a factor of neglect and have never been an inherent problem with this model. At one point or another somebody neglected that boat for awhile. On the other hand, mine has been well maintained since new and has had no blister problems, likewise anyone else I know. Like anything else in life, you get out what you put in.My advice to you would be to read the reviews on this web site. They may help in your decision.
