I bought a sailboat trailer a few years back and finally bought a O'Day 272 to go with it. I have a few questions about the setup and hoping to get some answers from some experienced people.
The first question has to do with the boat stands. This trailer has the bars that slide up and down to adjust the height of the pads with bolts to lock on place once you have your desired height instead of the screw type that comes out of the top. I don't really like this system as in my mind doesn't allow for a snug fit and doesn't allow you to make adjustments once on the road. However I have seen this system on several trailers and am told it works quite well.
The second question, I understand that the wing keel on the 272 is thicker on the front than the back. I want to tilt the boat a little forward for towing so would I just put most of the weight on the front of the keel or should I wedge the rear to support some of the weight? I could also wedge under the 2x8 to give it a angle but won't know what the angle will be until it's loaded on the trailer.
The third question, how wide should the boards be to support the keel? I was thinking of using either a 2x12 or 2x8.
The boat will be towed about 900 miles.
