Hi Everyone, has anyone found a stainless steel replacement hatch that will fit the forward hatch on a 1988 O'day 272? Any suggestions for the side hatches would help as well. I would like to not have to modify the boat much. Thank you for your time.

Rudy at D&R Marine may have a Bomar Hatch that will fit a 272. They're plastic though but the bolt patterns match up to the O'Day 222. It may be that they will match up to the 272.
Metal hatches are big bucks and you don't really know if they would work right in a molded recessed fore deck even if it did fit the opening, because of the hinge placements on some hatches. I've had conversations with Rudy at his store in regard to hatches. I just keep on repairing my Gray Marine hatch myself. Give him a call and talk to him.

Not the foredeck hatch....have replaced the middle of the 3 side hatches.
D & R Marine can send you those with the correct caulk & instructions that must be followed...believe me...we ignored the first set of instructions & had to re-order....The foredeck hatch rudy sells is much better than the original, but I think it is still a bit of grunt.....our second one has cracked from being tightened down...I have also noted the same hatch D & R sells w/screen is available on the Hunter part of this same website for around 35 dollars less.

Thank you everyone for your quick replies and suggestions. None of my hatches are leaking or broken, however, the forward hatch has what looks like a million cracks it. I always fear that someone will step on it and I will be looking for a hatch in the middle of summer. From the suggestions I looked at the Bomar hatch and it would be a great replacement. Does anyone have this hatch to comment on it's fit and durability? Thank you.

If it's a Gray Marine hatch mfg. in Tampa FL., you may be able to just replace the lens on it like I did. One of my friends accidentally broke the lens on his forward hatch and he removed it and used a thick Plexiglas. He installed it himself with Dap Silicone Rubber Adhesive Caulking.
I just removed my Lexan lens two weeks ago and used that stuff. It seems to be holding very well and it's not leaking anymore.
The cover on these hatches can be removed by taking the pins off the hinges and removing the Allen head bolts for the adjusters. The hatch cover is easy to work on if you can remove it from the frame on the boat.
The pins for the hinges have tiny ridges on one end of the pin that is designed to grip the plastic and they should be removed by using a pin punch from the other end using a small hammer. You need to look at the end of the pin to determine which way it has to come out of the hinge. All the pins on this hatch are set up this way, even the short pins that hold the knob bolt assemblies. Each knob on my hatch is pressed on to a threaded bushing which turns on the adjuster bolts. These hatches were built cheap.
The Bomar Hatches are a little better, but they're plastic too and they can break just as easy as these.
I have another Gray Marine hatch that I bought from Rudy that is down my cellar. I've been using it for spare parts.
