Comcidering moving uo to a 272 but I'm a little concerned about the short wing keel. I prefer sailing in 20 to 25 winds and do like sailing in rough weather, but i also just cruise the bay with my wife. I've been told that this model dose not point very well. Any Help??????

I love mine. I sail the same waters as you do and never had a problem. As far as pointing, mine did just okay until I bought my new sails. Now it points great! Read the reviews of this model on this website and you should get an accurate picture. E-mail me and I'll let you know the next time I go down to work on mine for launch and we'll get together. Operates a bit differently ....
to get the keel to point its best ... it needs that 15 to 20 degree heel angle even in light wind ... you have to move weight to get that angle so in light air you may want to sit downwind. you sail flat downwind only ... 15-20 degrees upwind. And if you go over that narrow range upwind the boat will sideslip pretty hard. vic "seven"

I love mine.
I love my 272LE. She has handled well in all the weather I've encountered. I'm more of a cruiser than anything else and for what we use her for she performes very well. No complaints. I checked it out this a.m. I especially liked what you did to access the area beneath the v-berth. Do you have the lift-off lids beneath the cushions in the center and to port and starboard? On my 272 there are hoses and wiring running beneath the starboard side of the v-berth, hoses to and from the holding tank in the center, and wiring on the port side. How much usable storage did you get by opening the three sides up? I would consider doing the same thing if you could describe how you maximized the space. Great,no, super photos!! Too bad we couldn't post all the excellent 272 and 272LE links like yours on the 272 page here at odayowners.com. What a great reference that would be. Regards, Tom

The best deal going on venetian blinds has to be from Home Depot. You can get them in just about any color you can think of and they'll cut them to the right length for you while you wait. The mechanisms come in varrious lenghts to accomodate a large number of sizes. You take the excess slats out to make them the right length. Heavy duty velcro or a couple of small screws secure the tops and they offer little brackets to hold the bottoms against the slanted cabinside. ~$15 each. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Nice boat but not a good performer
A friend of mine had a real nice 272 LE. It is a real nice boat. He sold his Oday 25 and bought this boat. He raced his 25 and did okay with it. The 272 small tiny keel kills it's performance. We would crush him with our Hunter 25.5 shoal draft going up wind and really all points of sail. He bought a new Mylar Head sail and had a pretty good main sail. But the Keel is just so small and it lets the boat slip side ways way too much. We tried allot of things to help the boat with changing sail settings and buying the new sail's but could not get the boat to stop the side slipping. After about 1 hour of sailing and starting side by side we had horizened him so bad that it was not even fun any more. Being a fan of all the Odays boats and having raced against some very fast 23's and 25's. If the 272 had the same keel as the 23 and 25 it could have been a good performer. But this is not the case. If you look at it and other boat keels in the boat yard it has to be obvious that the boat will just not perform. Sorry guy's I know some of you love your 272's and this is not a slam to the boat. Just an observation of the boat. I think the boat is a very nice design and is is a very nice boat down below but it just lacks in the sailing performance area. Cliff

I am not offended. I agree with you on your assessment. I love my 272 dearly, but am aware of its performance limitations. Mine doesn't point well, but I don't race. Last fall mine was one of the few boats able to navigate the channel at our marina at the end of the season due to the low water conditions on Lake Erie. I am a cruiser and find the stubby wing keel suited to the gunkholing I enjoy. The interior layout is superb for a boat of its size. All boats have limitations of one kind or another. I guess that's why there are so many sizes and models. There are some who race 272's and do well. I'm sure they will speak up if they pick up on this thread. Regards, Tom

I store the boat at Harbor Park as well. I dock at slip #5 in Turnbuckle basin (behind the condos) I'll be down that way in the next week of two to start the spring commissioning. I had some work done on my boat at Catawba Moorings three years ago. Would love to dock there, but it's kinda pricey. What do you sail? Tom
