O'Day 272 LE - removing the 10-2 for rebuild

O'day 272 LE Lake Lanier
Greetings,

Background:
I recently purchased an 87' 272 LE and have been making it a larger and larger project ever since. The PO painted the hull, bottom, and topside, but otherwise everything appears very much original. She is good looking from 10' away. Currently sitting on a trailer about 15 min from my home as the HOA won't let her get gussied up in the driveway.

The marine surveyor recommended to pull the fuel tank, replace lines, replace engine mounts, replace thru-hulls, robed deck hardware, and address the crazing on the topside gel coat. I began with removing the fuel tank, thinking if I could get the 10-2 running, all else I could take my time in addressing; however, removing the bulkhead under the cockpit I found rot and noticed that the HDPE fuel tank and head holding tank, along with old cushions and carpet hull liner were greatly contributing to a smelly boat.

I removed the fuel, water, and head holding tanks, along with all the head assembly / hosing, have stripped most of the headliner out and now gutting the boat due to all the rot found in the various bulkheads and cabinetry. I realized as I got further into this project that I want to do it right and never revisit most of what I am doing; therefore leading me further and further into the project danger zone.

Question:
I'm interested to pull the 10-2 out so I can potentially take it home and work on it in my garage or have someone do it for me; rebuilding as needed and replacing the engine mounts upon reinstall; plus the opportunity to clean up all the mess beneath her. The specs say she weighs about 130 lbs. Has anyone done this before that can share their experience? Any advice other than to have my head examined?

I realize this will likely mean a new shaft, prop, bearings, and replacing the stuffing box, but those are probably needed anyhow.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions and guidance.
Andrew

Hello Andrew: About two years ago I removed my 10-2 and had it rebuilt. It was not that hard if you have one of two things. First is access to a fork lift that will lift above the companion way or a tow truck with a lift or something of that nature. Or built a tri pod with rollers high enough so that you can roll the boat or the tri pod with the engine (125lbs) out from the boat you stated that the boat was on a trailer. Strongly I recommend two people for this task.
Good Luck

Thanks Charlie, good to hear... I do have access to a fork lift and possibly an overhead crane, but as the engine is mounted below the galley counter, I am curious if you dismantled the counter assembly or came out through the quarter birth into the companionway to lift it out. If the latter, how did that work out and were you able to salvage the coupling to the transmission or must I count on replacing the coupling, shaft, stuffing box, etc.?

Thanks again for the quick response!

Hello Andrew: I first removed the sink and surrounding cabinet. As I remember the 4 bolts that are attached to the shaft at the trans, and 4 bolt to the exhaust a couple of hoses and cables ( fuel line of course ). As we were about to remove the engine take note of the mounting bolts especially the front. Then remove the mounts on the engine(front) so that you can maneuver the engine up and out with out damaging the companion way. This is a good time to remove the shaft the cutless bearing and the prop. A propeller shop can straighten and balance and put in a new bearing for you. The cutless is held on by 4 screw bolts (piece of cake). The stuffing box can be repacked and the shaft hose replaced (important) with 4 hose clamps!!!!!!! two on each side.
Good Luck

Got the 10-2 out of the boat yesterday and see a few options as to how to proceed.
1. Set it up in the garage, clean it up, change fluids, filters, hoses, belts, gaskets, and general maintenance parts. Replicate fuel, battery, and water supply to make sure it runs prior to reinstallation. Any recommendations on a good manual or where to purchase parts?
2. Find a mechanic in the Atlanta area who can refurbish a 10-2 reliably. Any recommendations for a good mechanic nearby?
3. Crate it and ship it to a reputable mechanic who is familiar with the 10-2. Any recommendations or mechanics that you have used previously?

Based on the shell fish in the hoses removed and the mess I have to cleanup where the engine was located, I am imagining quite a bit of refurbishment required. The red paint is all coming off to the touch as well... Is this red lead?

As always, thanks for your inputs!
Andrew

I saw a few inspiring you tube videos of the 10-2 fully restored and running in someone's garage... Looking forward to when I can produce such a show.
