Background:
I recently purchased an 87' 272 LE and have been making it a larger and larger project ever since. The PO painted the hull, bottom, and topside, but otherwise everything appears very much original. She is good looking from 10' away. Currently sitting on a trailer about 15 min from my home as the HOA won't let her get gussied up in the driveway.
The marine surveyor recommended to pull the fuel tank, replace lines, replace engine mounts, replace thru-hulls, robed deck hardware, and address the crazing on the topside gel coat. I began with removing the fuel tank, thinking if I could get the 10-2 running, all else I could take my time in addressing; however, removing the bulkhead under the cockpit I found rot and noticed that the HDPE fuel tank and head holding tank, along with old cushions and carpet hull liner were greatly contributing to a smelly boat.
I removed the fuel, water, and head holding tanks, along with all the head assembly / hosing, have stripped most of the headliner out and now gutting the boat due to all the rot found in the various bulkheads and cabinetry. I realized as I got further into this project that I want to do it right and never revisit most of what I am doing; therefore leading me further and further into the project danger zone.
Question:
I'm interested to pull the 10-2 out so I can potentially take it home and work on it in my garage or have someone do it for me; rebuilding as needed and replacing the engine mounts upon reinstall; plus the opportunity to clean up all the mess beneath her. The specs say she weighs about 130 lbs. Has anyone done this before that can share their experience? Any advice other than to have my head examined?
I realize this will likely mean a new shaft, prop, bearings, and replacing the stuffing box, but those are probably needed anyhow.
