Hello, all. Could someone please explain the whys and wherefors of a 1976 O'Day 27 vs an O'day 27 Mk2 of the same vintage? Why did O'Day build the 27 with a shorter mast and longer boom? I can't find any info on the Mk2 design.
Thank you very much. :)

Around 1974-75 O'DAY updated the 27 with a different interior layout. The galley had originally been along the starboard side but was moved to the aft part of the cabin, tucked in the aft corner of the cabin on hte starboard side and running across the cabin to the port-side of the cockpit, kind of like the galley on the 25 and 26. Unfortunately, I only have a cabin drawing of the original layout. Around this time the mainsheet was relocated from a mid-boom traveller on top of the cabin (some had the traveller at the forward end of the cockpit) to the aft end of the cockpit. The rudder was reworked to reduce the depth of the skeg ahead of it and add the area taken off the skeg to the rudder to create a more balanced rudder. The tiller location changed slightly as well I think.

The later models, (1977-78, maybe 1976?) did have an optional deeper keel, draft increased from 4' to 5' by adding a lead "shoe" to the bottom of the keel (100# added) I don't see any sailplan changes noted in my info.

Thank you for the reply. I found these dimensions on the Mauri Pro Sailing site:
O'Day 27, I = 35', J = 11.7', P = 29.5', E = 9.3' O'Day 27 Mk2, I = 30.8', J = 10.5', P = 26.1', E = 10.5'. Really quite a difference between the two. My 27 was built in late 1976 and has the aft galley, and relocated mainsheet (but no traveler). The boom measures over 10', and while I have not measured the mast, the main has a 26' luff. & 10'6" foot, so I must have a 27 Mk2 for which I find no info.
Any ideas, anyone?

27 MK II must be a 272

That listing for a 27 MKII is actually for the later 272 (1986-89). This was a very different boat, more of an overgrown 26 with a wing-keel.
You may have ended up with a 272 mainsail? However, a 1976 (or 1977, if built in late 1976) O'DAY 27 would definitely be a 27 not a 272.

Re: 27 MK II must be a 272

Sunbird, I think you're correct about the dimensions being those of a 272. Someone could have switched the rig and sails of a 272 with the original rig and sails of the boat I purchased. When the boat was surveyed it was on jack stands with the mast laid somewhat diagonally across the cabin top, fastened to the bow pulpit and a rear cleat. I just never thought to measure it.
