O'Day 27 Ballast

I am considering purchasing a 1977 O'Day 27. I need to know if the keel is lead or steel. It is too far away to check myself. The boat is owned by a friend and he's giving it to us, but husband says NO if it is steel.Thanks

Cast iron?

The ballast portion of the keel on my O27 is entirely contained inside the fiberglass laminate, so I can't be positive, but I think it's cast iron. The thing is totally sealed in f'glass, which may address your husbands' concerns.

Brochure says Lead

I found a scan of the O'day 27 brochure at the "unofficial" O'day site. On the specifications page it indicates that the ballast is internal and that it is lead.
