Fredrik, is there a reason you want to reinforce your chainplates?

If your bulkhead is rotted, it needs to be replaced. Reinforcement is a temp and dangerous solution. That bulkhead not only holds the chainplates, it supports the cabin top and mast step.
Sorry, just reading in your question. I hope it is not, and that I am wrong.

Thanks, I understand the bulkhead issue (upper main shrouds attach there), but the lower shrouds are sandwiched into deck via a flat plate... Fredrik

Re: Bad Bulkhead Reply

One of our club members recently bought a 1974 O'Day 27 and I noticed that his lower chainplates were attached in the same way as you described. I'm wondering if it is possible to drill a couple of holes through the outside of the hull on each side of the boat and bolt them in place, and I don't advocate that you do this, but it may be one of a few options. The guy to talk to about that, would be Rudy Nickerson of D & R Marine. Rudy worked for O'Day years ago, and has a vast knowledge of these boats. He bought out all their molds and parts after they closed up. He recently bought out all the Alden factory parts. I had problems with chainplates leaking and Rudy gave me some ideas that cured that problem on my boat. He's in Assonet Ma., and can be reached at (508) 644-3001.

Fredrik, The 25 has both shrouds connected to the bulkhead

on the same chain plate. The 272 also has both shrouds connected to the same chainplate connected to the bulkhead.
I am guessing but I think O'Day found out quickly that shroud to deck was not a good Idea.
The other thing is that if you use a loos tension gage and their calculations, you will pull the deck off the boat( or put the compression post through the hull....). O'Day recommended an (1 inch) inch of play with moderate pressure for thr shround, fore stay and back stay.
Sounds like the easy fix, (your evaluation) is to bring the lower shroud to the side shroud chainplate.
Just a thought.

I use a loos gauge on my 26 (not shroud to deck, but to bulkhead on mine). Does your comment hold true here? I use the recommended tensions on the loos. You're scaring me a little.

You probably have about four or five choices of tensions that correspond to the thickness of your stays. I wouldn't worry about using a Loos Gauge to set your stays. I've been using a Loos Gauge on my stays for years with no problems, and I don't anticipate any problems. A tension gauge regardless of the make, will give you something to go by so that you can get equal tension on your stays. It's up to you to come up with a happy medium for a range of tensions that correspond to the thickness of the stays. You could pick a number which would give the stays less tension that is less than their lowest number given for the stay diameter, if you like.

I stand by my last reply...

I would tighten things to about a 1" play about 4' about the deck with moderate effort. My boats have always sailed well tuned like that. I think the Loos people created a nitch by saying that the cable tensions could be much greater. Thus selling thier product. I think is stresses more boats that don't need to be stressed. This is how I have sailed my boats. All of them have been Hunt Designs.
Just my opinion.
