Oday 26 Sink Drain

Hello, I am new to sailing and I am going through my boat getting it ready for the upcoming season. My boat has a galley sink that drains straight down to a thru hull on the bottom of the boat. A ball valve is attached to the thru hull. Is this the standard set up or was this a previous owner modification? It seems that most people commenting on this boat have their sinks drain to the bilge. Should I change the drain to the bilge or leave it the way it is? If I leave it draining out the thru hull should install a more seaworthy seacock?

Sorry for all of the questions, but thanks for reading and help.

I don't have an Oday, but my sink is plumbed to a through hull will a ball valve. Don't know why anyone would want sink water in the bilge.

Hi Scott,
Welcome to the forum and being an O'day owner!

I have an O'day 25. The sink drain to the through hull is stock. Gate valves were stock and from what I've read marine ball valves are the usual replacement. I replaced mine and I am glad I did. The gate valve was frozen tight in the open position. The idea is you can't see if a gate valve is fully closed but you can see if a gate valve is closed, although I think you are really questioning if the drain through the hull is stock/normal. Yes it is.

Letting the sink gravity drain through the hull is much nicer than having the bilge fill with dirty water and having to pump it out. Just make sure you leave the valve closed when your not aboard, the hose is in good shape and has double hose clamps on it.

Enjoy!

OUr 272 has the same drain and has worked flawlessley for 27 years or so....otherwise your 'spilt milk' will end up in the bilge which makes for an unhappy bilge...we open and close our thru hulls each time we arrive and leave the boat...good luck!

Welcome Scott. Everything Ward said is spot on. Replacing the old is not hard. There is a lot of information here how to do it. Definitely replace the old undersized plywood backing plate with a new larger plywood or fiberglass backing plate. I used "Japanese marine plywood " (Okemo???) and lifecaulk.
An oscillating saw will quickly cut the old mushroom out.

I had a drain problem also. Didn't want to add a through hull, heard horror stories about their failures, didn't want water in bilge either. I was able to run 1' flexible hose from the bottom of the sink to the cockpit scuppers about 4' away. Obviously it must all run downhill, but if near enough and you can access the PVC pipe that connects the two drain holes in the scuppers, the parts are super cheap. Some elbows for routing, and a T mounted into the pipe, and a few radiator style clamps and caulk to seal everything, is only several bucks. It's the work in confined space that determines the efforts. The rocking keeps the drain free. If you decide this can work for you, let me know and I'll tell you details of hose and fittings.

Pic of T mounted in scuppers and final elbow for drain tube before turning up and sealing.

I'm not sure I know what a gate valve looks like vs. a thru hull w/handle....all of the thru hulls on our boat basically look alike with a handle except the over-board for the holding tank....which is a 2 inch
groco bronze thru-hull. Maybe I am speaking out of place as to what they all look like, but they all of have a handle...what makes a gate valve a gate valve? All of ours are placed with a 3/8 inch thick piece of plywood backing them at the hull. Thanks for helping me understand.

Thanks for all of the responses. It is exactly the kind of information I was looking for. I am sure I will have more questions once this project is complete.

..what makes a gate valve a gate valve.
A gate valve uses a plate that moves in the valve housing to cut off the water supply. A ball vale has a round ball, with a hole in the middle and the hole rotates to block off the water supply. Gate valves are typically identified by a round handle (think hose bib), while a gate valve uses a lever type handle.

You can see the difference in these photos.(these are not marine valves, just for visual reference ).

The " thru hull" is the fitting that goes through the fiberglass hull. Typically the valve attaches to the thru hull.(photo with no red handle).

Thank you very much for affirming what I have which is the ball valve's in all cases.. Is there a typical
life span for a ball valve? The big one (2 inch) groco which is for direct head pump out or from the holding tank has a frozen handle...but it is frozen in the closed position.....we use one of the club's pump out stations so it seems to be a non-issue...i.e. we don't pump directly overboard. I might feel different about replacing the groco if we lost use of our pump out facilities...I'm not in favor of pumping directly overboard in a fresh water lake.

not sure about the life of the valves, but "exercising" them regularly helps to keep them from freezing up. I do not think you can dump waste in any inland lake (including the Great Lakes where I sail) maybe the waste valve was disabled, since you have to lock them out if not out on the ocean I think.

now that you mention it, the local Coast Guard did do a boat inspection at our club about the time the
handle was first noticed frozen....I was the only boat that stuck around for the inspection...everyone else fled when they heard there was going to be an inspection.....

Those old Grocos are famous for freezing up- the big rubber plug in the middle deforms. It would be worth your while to replace that with a new valve, marelon or bronze. Sooneer or later it's going to leak...

Was that a US COAST GUARD INSPECTION or did the local USCG AUXILIARY schedule a Vessel Safety Check day at your club??

If is was the USCGAUX (or US Power Squadron) coming to to VSCs (Vessel Safety Checks), you and your club friends had nothing to fear and EVERYTHING to gain. The VSC is a FREE, VOLUNTARY check of your boat's safety gear and is a great program! It allows a boatowner to have his/her boat checked for compliance with Federal, State and local requirements and the results are only revealed to the examiner and boatowner. No report is made to authorities, and even if your boat fails miserably... you will not be stopped from leaving the dock (highly cautioned against going out if any serious definciencies were found, but they can't actually stop you from going out). The Vessel Examiners are often very knowledgeable on not only requirements, but also advice gained through their own experiences with their boats. Did I mention this is a FREE service? I highly recommend that ALL boatowners request a VSC if they have an opportunity, I find it very comorting to have anohter set of eyes check my boat to be sure I haven't overlooked anything........... and a few times I did actually miss something.... OOPS! Thanks to the VSC, I was able to correct the problem at the dock, with no penalty (well ,except the disappointment of not getting my Decal!) instead of facing a possible fine if hte problem had been discovered by a State or USCG Boarding officer.
If your vessel meets all the requirements, you will receive a Decal showing that you passed and a copy of the checklist. Your insurance company may offer a discount for having passed the VSC, and although it is NOT a guarantee, often times the USCG or State Patrol will be less likely to want to board a vessel with a current VSC Decal, again...... no guarantee.... but, seeing hte Decal they know the boat was recently checked and as long as they do not observe any obvious violations....... they often will instead check the next boat that goes by instead of yours.

Check out http://SafetySeal.net for a list of what is required and to find a local Vessel Examiner on-line.

I got the "passed inspection decal"....I figured I had nothing to fear, and kind of got to know the local
C.G. They did attach a wire to the broken groco thru hull to insure I would not try to open it....I appreciate your comments above Sunbird.....and may try to order a new 2 inch thru hull before
launching the boat this coming spring.....Is there a preferred brand...I assume bronze is preferred?
thanks ! BTW.. I did put the passed decal on the steering pedestal so it is clearly visible.
