p.s. rick, can you post a pic or two of long island sound? I wuld love to explore that area. My only knowledge of that area comes from my love of the revolutionary war history.

We are road biking. We are doing 30 to 45 mile rides every other day. We will be boosting that up to 50 to 60 miles nest week. The only riding my son has done before this is a 50 miler to get his cycling merit badge on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout. He is now giving me a run for my money, but I can always say he has a 33 year advantage! Here is a picture of my wife and I before the 2007 ride. It looks like our apple trees still have some bloom in the background.

Here are some pictures of our last 4 days. The first is the sunset from the anchorage at Duck Island Roads. The nest is the skipper putting the boat to good use. The next is a picture of some rain at the same anchorage as a series of violent storms moved through. After that batch of rain stopped, when we stuck our heads out, we saw a boat had come in that we recognized. "Kukulcan", an O'Day 40 was there. They came in through the downpour. They stopped in on their way to great rOnDAYvous, which we will miss this year. We rafted up for the night and this is us getting ready to leave in the morning. The last one is of my wife at the helm on a chilly overcast morning yesterday morning.

I have many pictures of LIS. I have spent parts of every summer since I was born down there. My parents bought a small cottage in Guilford the year after I was born. Many pictures are on film. Here are some that I can quickly access on the computer. The first is self explanatory. The second is of Falkners Island, a mall island about 2 miles offshore. The picture looks north towards the Conn shore. The last is Indian Cove, where our boat is moored. "Apple O'Day" is to the far left. The north shore of Long Island can be seen. It is about 20 miles away. The picture is taken from my parents' cottage.

That is really a beautiful area. What a great area to grow up. We spent the day on the river in calhoun Ga. The Ostanaula, Lots of BBQ, Beer and Gunpowder. Fortunately no one got shot!. It was Ok, but not my favorite way to pass the time. I tend to be a little bit on the quiet side.
I would love to be biking. A fifty mile ride is quiet a ride. Talk about saddle sore, that is what seems to take the longest to get used too. I have never ridden more than 14 or 15 miles in one sitting, but they were trail miles. Looks great. Have a great ride!

Appleman:

By chance do you have a picture of your main sail reefed? Your boat is rigged a little different than mine.

Great pictures. What lighthouse is that?

Waiting for more...

No, I don't have a picture of it reefed, but I will be at the boat after tomorrow for a couple of days and can take one. I rigged up a single line system since my boat does not have a reefing horn on the gooseneck.

The lighthouse is the Faulkners Island light. It has a long history, in fact there is a very interesting book about the history of Faulkners. I don't have our copy right handy to get the author. 300 years ago it was about 8 acres and used to be farmed. Today storms and erosion have reduced it to just over 3. Rip rap has been put on the NE shore to slow the process and save the light. That shows up in the picture. There was a light keepers house, but it burned in '68. Before that and when the Coasties manned it, we could go out and go on the island and if they weren't busy, would take us up into the light. That was cool. The little square building used to house a generator and compressors to blow the fog horn. The horn was two large trumpets off the side of the building. I use to love the sound of them, wish they were still there. The island is now off limits, as it a preserve, and one of the Sounds' major Tern rookeries.

That is why we have to increase mileage. Saddle time. We can ride the 192 miles ok now, but will have saddle sores. We are spending about 2 1/2 hours on the saddle to go 45 miles and have to extend that out. The PMC is 110 miles the first day and 81 the second. Getting on that seat on Sunday mornig at 5:00 wakes you up quickly. There are some great signs about the seats that spectator hold along the route

I am not even sure how to reef my mainsail. I sure will be glad when i can get the boat into the water! I have so many projects going on at once. And still have some that I haven't even started.
So i would love to see any pictures of rigging options, reefing, etc.
I do have some books on that, and their are friends at the club that will help me too. I could spend more time at the club sailing with others. But then that would be less time working on the boat, not to mention house chores, kids, etc.
But I am still very optimistic that, by this spring, i should be back in the water. Maybe by fall

Solar Trickle Charger?

Appleman, this is completely off topic, but one of your photos shows what looks like a small Sunsei solar panel affixed to your stern rail. Is that right? If so, do you use it to maintain your battery? How do you like it?

Yes it is to maintain the battery. It works. In fact, with full sun I can rum my handheld GPS, fish finder, and XM with stereo, and still have 13.2 volts. Its not charging, but I'm not using much battery to run those.

Thanks. I've been considering getting a similar unit for my boat.
