Oday 26 Diesel Engine

I have just purchased an 1984 Oday 26 with the Yanmar diesel in it. Any words of wisdom from other owners who have this power plant? It has been 10 years since the engine has been run. However, it turns over OK. I believe I need to drain the diesel tank, change all the filters and bleed out the injector pump. Comments welcome!

Change water pump impeller too

The flexible impeller in the water pump has probably lost its' resilience and will break soon, if not immediately you start the engine.Suggest you find out the model # of the engine & refer to it in future posts; also you'll need to know it when looking for parts etc.

All good suggestions! Thanks. Engine is a 1GM - the little 6.5 hp one lunger. Good ideas also in Jerry Powlas's article in this months Good Old Boat mag.

Cleanliness is key

I had a similar situation with a 18 hp Volvo Penta that had not been started for 6 years. I replaced the fuel tank, all lines filters, impellor, etc and it's been running great for 2 years. My thinking behind replacing the tank and everything in the fuel system leading up to the engine was that I would be starting with clean fuel. If I did run into problems, I could probably rule out bad fuel as the problem. Just draining the tank may not do it. Lots of crud builds up in there when it sits and a new 18 gal. tank is only $110 or so. It's worth the investment and the effort to replace it.
