Oday 26 BOOM ATTACHMENT

Stepped the mast on my 26 and have a boom question. Sorry for all the questions but this is new to me and want to make sure everything as much as possible is safe.

The mast has a track for the boom to slide in. There is a screw at the top of the track and one at the bottom. I removed the top screw, slid the boom into the receptacle, kept the bottom screw in (so it does not slide out) and attached the topping lift, and put the top screw in (so it does not slide out the top).

Is that all there is? The boom has about6 to 8 inches to move on the track.

I assume the sail provides the upward tension and the Eye at the bottom of gooseneck provides downhaul tension.
What should I put on the downhaul eye? Where does it attach? How to control it. Or is it set it and forget it.

Tie a line to the eye at the bottom of the gooseneck and tie the other end to the cleat that should be on the mast about half way down to the deck.
Does your mast have a black line marked on it just above the boom gooseneck? That marks the highest point your boom should be.
I cleat the line so the boom rises to or just under that black line.
If you don't have the black line just tie it so the boom can rise a few inches.
It can be a sail trim control but I just set and forget. If I need more tension on the luff of the sail, I use the halyard to do it.
