Hope I'm not wearing you guys out....but have another question. What is the purpose of the small fiberglass compartment located under the top step from the companionway? At first, since it's right in front of the cooler, I thought it was some sort of "crisper" but it is not insulated. It has a teak insert in the shape of a squashed "H". For my life, I cannot figure this out, and I've asked several lay people and no one can come up with anything that makes sense. Thanks....Gary

I also have a 76 25' but mine is a fin keel. The compartment under the step makes a great place to store things that you need often (i.e. can opener pliars mirror for checking fuel level to name a few). As far as a specific purpose I'm not sure there is one.

Gary, That tray is where I keep my eating utensils. However, I put a handle on each side of that fiberglass tray ( on my 78 O'Day 25)so I can lift it out. Then I installed a box with drain holes in it just under it so that I can put wine bottles (Standing up) under that tray. It made that space work out well.I can put two magnum size bottles and a small vermouth bottle in it. r.w.landau

There was some foam insulation that had it a bit jamed in there but careful prying and that fiberglass bin will pop right out. You might want to look up under through the sink cabinet door first. Mike, send the $20 to....... r.w. Maybe I will just walk out back and take a picture.....

Oh....THAT tray!
On my 28 footer, assuming I leave the teak cover off, it's great for catching the rain that comes in through my ill fitting hatch boards during some of the sideways rains we get on Pickwick Lake. But thanks for the info, once I get some better hatch boards I will have other ideas for its use! Bob Amos "Simple Dreams"

Engine access
I have a 30 Oday w/ diesel engine.When I remove the tray it gives me easier access to the top of the engine especially when adding coolant.

I never gave it much thought - as far as I know it was designed as a catchall for stuff you need. Key to get into the fuel tank, dividers, pliers, battery tester, bottle opener, corkscrew and misc. junk, whatever you need but don't want to dig for. I've always called it a "Companionway drawer" even though it isn't a drawer. Geof s/v Day-O
