My son just purchased his first boat, a '78 O'Day 25. The mast was temporarily stepped by the seller, in his driveway, for show, and I noticed that the spreaders were pointed forward by 10 degrees or so. I asked the seller, (who was not really a sailor, and was selling for a friend) if the shrouds were rigged correctly, and he really did not know. Looking at the geometry ot the shrouds, it seems that the spreaders should be perpendicular to the centerline of the boat.
The simple question is, should the spreaders point directly abeam, or do they point foreward or aft. If they should point abeam, is it possible that they got reversed port to starboard? Would that cause them to angle forward?
Never rigged a sailboat before, so this is virgin territory for me. Been reading about stepping a mast, and while it seems straightforward, the prospect of losing the mast on my son's first boat is a little scary.
Any advice is appreciated.
