The fiberglass rail in the starboard lazerette is a great place to add a piece of wood and some hooks for keeping your lines organized in the locker. This is not a great veiw of this but if you need more info I try a better picture. The wood is "L" shaped and is connected like the backrest in the cabin. Please note that my boat is on the hard in my back yard and that automotive charger should not be there!!! r.w.landau

How is it attached
I haven't looked that hard at that rail. How did you attach the wood? The previous owner put a plywood shelf in the port quarterbirth and strapped down an automotive battery charger. There is shore power available but I haven't used it yet. Had a little Bonnie Raitt in the tape deck last weekend but not for long. That battery just keeps on going, and going, and going . . . . Mike, You can use a 2" stainless wood screw or a bolt. The wood piece that I made is a "T" section.Part of the "T" is on top of the fiberglass rail and the other part ( the vertical leg)is what you see in the picture. I screwed down throught the horizontal leg and through the fiberglass rail. If I didn't do a good job of explaining, I will take another photo. r.w.landau

to you for the photo ideas. You had related the idea for the table storage idea earlier, but seeing is MUCH better. It's on my spring agenda for tooth'n'nail. Have you tried 5200 to glue wooden parts to the hull? I've had pretty good luck building an overhead chart rack in the quarter berth with 5200 supporting the structure and I built a storage rack for the companionway hatches and screens which is glued to the back of the fibreglass wall which forms the support for the cockpit seat to port. Hope this finds you well. I always find your posts valuable. Tom

5200 is a polyurethane adhesive made by 3M.
It is NOT a caulk, but a very strong adhesive which comes in a tube and is applied with a caulking gun. I have had great success with 5200 bonding wooden parts to the fibreglass hull on my 272. I didn't want to use screws or nuts and bolts to secure the wooden backing strips for various storage projects I added to the boat so I glued them with 5200. In one case I was able to glue a backing strip to the hull liner without cutting it away and it has held without any problem. That is why I asked R.W. if he had used 5200. He is a woodworker by trade as I am, and I was curious about what he does to avoid screwing and bolting. You can find 5200 as well as other adhesive and caulking products in the WM and BoatUS catalogs, among others. Tom

I put a shelf in the lazerette for mops, oars, boat hooks, etc. and used 5200 to bond it. No problem, and it gets damp in there too. Tom

I found 3m 5200 at the Wal mart the other day. Much better price. They only have the smaller tubes but for the most part thats not a bad idea because it has to be used once it is opened. I'm just waiting for the weather to warm up enough to rebed all the deck hardware and install new transducers with it.

Schmit! thats a brilliant idea! Keeps you from having unsightly bolts...has less permanence then holes. Well, only a little less...but it's still better then drilling holes. Holes leak. Concidering I want to add some mods to my 22, like expanding the counter/sink area with a new unit and put some shelves up on the bulkhead to cover up the holes left by the old fuse panel, this would be a good idea. Also could be used to construct the fuel tank box between the two cockpit seats at the back as has been done by others...I never thought of just glueing the wood in place. Thanks for a new idea! Josh
