Hello I am in the process of looking for a new engine and am not going to be at the boat for a little while to measure. Is a long or short shaft engine more suited for an ODay 25? Thank you Mike

A long shaft isn't long enough. You need a 25" extra-long shaft. As far as I know, only three companies make them: Honda, Tohatsu/Nissan, and Yamaha. I have a Yamaha 9.9 on my 25.

At the risk of sounding slightly obscene, I say to you: the longer, the better. A regular length shaft (15"), just is not going to be long enough. With the "standard" Oday motor mounting location, a regular length shaft probably won't have its prop submerged. I agree with Steve, an extra long shaft would be better, although I bet a 20" would be adequate. I have a 20" on my Oday 23 (which I believe has the same stern and transom as the 25), and it is sufficiently deep to keep the prop in the water almost all of the time. I do wish I had the 25" shaft when it gets choppy.

When I got my 25, it had the original outboard bracket and a 25" Johnson Sailmaster. The prop was in the water most of the time. But I had to keep everyone aft, and it would cavitate all the time. And, the Engine was hard to reach to shift and start when the bracket was lowered. When I upgraded to the Yamaha 9.9 High-Thrust,I replaced the bracket with one rated for a four-stroke. This new bracket has less travel, and had to be lowered on the transom. I also took this opportunity to fabricate a wedge out of teak to make the bracket plumb. Now my prop is fully in the water, the new motor has the shifter on the tiller, making it easier to reach, and the 9.9 High-Thrust makes maneuvering easier. So I went from an extra-long Johnson, to an extra-long high-thrust Yamaha. Why do these things always sound dirty?

Mercury 9.9 on the back of my 25
I have a Mercury 2006 Long shaft 9.9 four stroke on the back of Lola. I am using the factory wedge with an upgraded lift. It works great, no complaints, and have only had the prop out of the water a couple of times. And the times that I did, the extra long shaft would not have made a difference.

Mike................. An extra long shaft would be nice..... but hard to find. I have an O'Day 25 and I have a long shaft (20"). You will not be a happy camper with a short shaft.

There is a guy online that sells Tohatsus and Nissan for cheap. That's what i would get. When I needed an engine, the Tohatsu/Nissan was my first choice for both its low price and weight, but they were back-ordered all over the country. I called all over locally, until I found a dealer with the Yamaha I bought. It was a few hundred dollars more, but it is very nice. Get the 25" shaft, you won't regret it.
