Can someone tell me whether the O'Day 25 in Keel/Centerboard configuration is really a centerboard ? I see many mentions of swing keel. Is it a huge, heavy swing keel, or a modest weight centerboard. I am currently looking to buy one of these boats. Doug Daniel 434-841-4034

A very nice boat
The centerboard on the Oday 25 is relatively lightweight (as compared to the true "swing keels" on the Catalina 22 and 25). It probably weighs about 50 or 60 lbs. The ballast for the Oday (about 1500 lbs I think)is encapsulated in the stub keel. The board is light enough to be controlled by a single pendent line; no crank or block and tackle. The Oday 25 is a nice boat. If you are looking for a comfortable day sailer with overnight or weekend accomodations, its a keeper. The only other boat in its price range that I think is comparable is the Catalina 25. The Catalina has some advantages over the Oday: the option of a pop-top cabin, the option of a tall rig, the option of a fixed fin keel, and a manufacturer still in business that will support your maintenance efforts. However, the Oday is superior to the Catalina in that most of the Catalina 25's were made with swing keels; I don't like the idea of all of my boat's ballast swinging around on one pivot pin and relying on a crank for adjustment. The Oday with the stub keel and centerboard sails better and points higher than the Catalina swing keel. Also, all other things being equal, the Oday will probably be cheaper to buy than the Catalina. Bottom line is both are really fun, nice boats.

another option
You might consider the O'day 23. They are also shoal draft with a centerboard. The galley and sink slide under the cockpit to give excellent amount of room below. Mine is a '79 and we just love her. Good Luck

I have an O'Day 25 centerboard. It is indeed a true centerboard. The keel weights 1825 lbs, and the centerboard weighs 60. When you see someone mentioning O'Day's "swing keel", it's a misnomer. All of their boats were either fixed keel or centerboard/trunk models. Even though O'Day is out of business, parts are easily obtained from D&R Marine (he's a former employee). Also, O'Day did make a "tall rig" (I think it's 2 feet taller) with a fixed keel.

Should be two numbers for draft.....
....with a keel/centerboard arrangement. In the case of the O'day 25 it's 2'3" with the board up and 6'0" with it down, according to the 1975 brochure. For comparison purposes, the fixed keel version of the 25 draws 4'6"

CB vs Swing Keel
I had to order a new centerboard pendant today, and figured I'd get the information straight from Rudy (he used to work for O'Day when they were in business). O'Day never made a 25' swing keel. The 1975 O'Day had a crank for the centerboard in the cabin, but it was still a centerboard. However (contrary to what I've heard) they made a few 23's that had a cast iron swing keel, but discontinued the practice because of the problems they had with them. The only "validity" I can assign to this is that I definitely heard it from Rudy.
