Hi All, I am new here but have owned a Javelin since 2002 and really like the way O'Day built their boats. I think they did a great job with the layout of the 25 except for the silly sink in the "head". I am looking at a 1976 O'day 25 and am wondering if there are any specific weak areas to pay attention to in a survey. As a 30 year old boat I realize there will be issues but I am looking for specifics like weak hull/deck joint, blister problems, core rot, etc... The previous owner began a restoration which appears to be of good workmanship, there are no obvious interior leaks, all deck hardware seems to be recently re-bedded, new thru hulls were installed, the interior has been painted and insulation and 1/4" pine tongue and groove was installed in the main cabin. I am going to inspect her and make an offer this weekend and could use some specific areas of concern to check so I have no surprises :^) With your help I may be the newest 25 owner on the forum here. I have 3 boat restorations under my belt, including a 36' Wooden cabin cruiser, so I will not be scared off, I just want to get her for a fair deal with no surprises. Thanks for any help you can offer... Allen

Other than general soft spots on the

deck and cockpit, there are only a few. Bulkheads are the next thing. A leaking chainplate can cause the bulkhead to rot. If the boat has been stored with water in it, it can rot the bottom of the bulkheads and the compression post. The next thing to look for is the backing plywood where the motor is mounted. I think this is the most common problem. It is repairable but you are going to be crawling around in the bildge and applying fiberglass and epoxy. Check the rudder to make sure it is not splitting. One of the most frequent problems is broken rudders. Things like centerboard pennants are a pain to replace but I call that maintenance. Other than that most things are cosmetic and maintenance items. r.w.landau

Thanks

I did a quick 15 minute check and the bulkheads and comperssion post base seemed OK. Thanks for the quick reply. Allen

Allen, look deep!

Once you buy it, at some point you have to sell it. Make sure the price fits the boat! r.w.landau
