I have a 1975 O'day 25. I need to replace the main and jib halyards. The main is part traditional line/rope (probably 3/8 to 1/2/) and it splices into a wire (like a stay) for a good portion of the line. If I try to replace with just a rope I'm wondering if it will fit thru the mast head block.

It should but I'd check just to be sure. Replace the halyard with 5/16 line.

I have all rope halyards on my 79 Oday 23, and they fit thru the mast-head sheaves just fine. With the advent of reasonably priced low stretch line, there is no need to use the wire-to-rope splices anymore.

We replaced our O'day 25 wire/rope with just rope, and prefer it. We had to drop the mast to get to the sheaves, as we couldn't get the line to pull through from down below. I would take the opportunity to take the mast top off and check your sheaves. One of ours was grooved clean through from a jammed wire halyard, so we replaced it. It's all good now.
