Has anyone thought about increasing the sailability of the 25'sCB with a retofit wing keel? I have thought about this when I had my Paceship 23. I am wondering if the swing centerboard could be completely eliminated with the substitution of an custom cast or moulded wing bolted to the centerboard trunk to create a wing keel. The Paceships trunk was cast iron. That could be tapped to accept the wing. Is the Oday 25 CB's centerboard trunk cast also or is it a ballast filled fiberglass integral part of the hull? Justin, do you know anything about the c25 swing keel factory retrofit wing keel? I have heard that the 1200# swing keel is eliminated with a factory retrofitted wing keel. I am wondering if this would aid in some latitude in reducing sails in heavy weather. I am asking this as more of a discussion than practicality due to the fact that the modification would definitly change the racing statis of the boat. But at the same time if it would be functional in the cruising aspect, it may be worth it. Please fill the board with comments and ideas. Thanks again for the continued response. r.w.landau

First I've Heard of This Modification

The OD25 came in 2 keel configs., including the stub keel/drop CB, and a fin keel model. A friend on the west coast of Canada, Gord Nyon, has a fin keel model. It probably is a bit faster on certain points of sail than my keel/CB, and perhaps points a bit higher. For Gord, shallow water, is less of a concern. However, if you like to tuck in close to shore for the night or sail in predominantly thin water, the shoal draft model may be more preferred. My keel ballast is encapsulated in fiberglass, and there is no keel bolts to worry about. Adding depth to the keel, or removing this and replacing it with a wing keel would be a project that could get way out of hand, with no way of predicting sailing performance. Personally, I would rather commit my precious hours to projects of more predictable outcome. Don

Wing Keel Retrofit.

The only kit like this that I am aware of is for the Catalina 25 Swing Keel. In that case you are replacing a 1500# swing keel with a bolt on wing of the same weight. This is only available because of several swing keel cables breaking and also because the company is still in business to offer the kit. On the Catalina, you are looking at a total cost of nearly $3000 - $4000 for the complete job. The wing alone cost $1750 + shipping from California. Ben Allen Montgomery, AL "Wahoo" OD 26
