We have an Oday 25. The automatic bilge pump is under the cockpit aft of the water tank. We got water in the bilge and it got high enough that there was water in the cabin but it still wasn't high enuf to get to the automatic bilge pump. Where do other Oday 25's have their bilge pumps. The actual bilge seems too shallow to put in a pump so we aren't sure what to do. (The leakage problem has been solved so just want to solve the bilge pump problem incase it happens again.)

Bilge Pump?

I have a Thirsty Mate that I keep under the galley sink. I pump it into a bucket and dump it into the cockpit. The boat is 30 years old and has never had an automatic bilge pump. The only leakage comes from above anyway. Some day I want to set up a permanent manual pump with the intake at the lowest point of the bilge and the outlet through the transom. Someday...

Sailoff, A small Rule pump will fit in the bilge.

If you open the bilge access you will see the top of the lead ballast that is glassed in. At the most forward area of the opening, just behind the compression post and bulkhead, is a depression for mounting a pump. You are connecting through the fiberglass that glasses in the lead ballast. I have a small rule electric pump on the starboard side and a strainer for a manual pump that in mounted in the starboard lazzerette. One thing I am going to change is the hose size to the manual pump. I would have to have water to the cabin sole before it would pump anything out. The hose for it runs forward and under the head and back through the cabin inside the port settee. The hose is about 20' long and 1" in diameter. I need about 3 gallons just to fill the hose. As soon as I am done pumping, all the water in the hose is back in the bilge. Good luck with your design, r.w.landau

bilge pump

I have a similar set up as R.W.. I have two rule 800's on each side of the bilge area as described by R.W. I have these two pumps tee'd together. The discharge hose runs aft under the sink and to the transom with a large loop above the water line and then out through the transom. I have both pumps set on a float switch to turn on automatically when I am away from the boat. In all honesty two rule 800's is over kill. I went with two due to how the centerboard makes two separate low area's in the bilge. I know of others who just use one pump on one side and use a sponge to keep the other side dry. If I was starting over I would probably also go with that. A rule 800 fits like a glove in the space. I have heard of someone on here using a rule 1000 automatic pump. They had said it was a very tight fit but it worked. Best of luck!

Bilge pump

Sailoff. I have much the same as R.W. on the port side. Mine is a Rule 500 and the float switch is located about two inches aft of the pump. I have it wired so i can use it manually or the float switch will do the trick. I always have about an inch of water in that area of the bilge, about a half gallon total. It allows me to dump Mr Clean in the bilge to keep it clean and smell nice. It discharges through the hull just under the head sink, about six feet of hose.

I never thought about the head sink. I may remove the tee and send out the starboard side pump to the head sink and leave the port pump out the transom. I also have the float switch a couple of inch's aft of the pumps. I have about the same amount of water left over, maybe alittle more due to the long run to the back of the boat. The rule auto / manual switch is really handy and worth the 25 bucks.

Good poine

R.W. has a good point. Be sure the connection point is as low as you can get it. A check valve will prevent your sink from draining back through the bilge pump. I have a hull penatration for each.
