O'day 23 thru-hull question

Hi all,Hope you're all doing great! Hey, for all the O'day 23 owners out there, question for ya : Thru-hull.I'm restoring an O'Day 23 pop-top and I didn't see any thru-hulls anywhere on the boat....until this weekend, while in the process of removing old bottom paint, I found a thru-hull located amidships, port side and about 2' up from the keel. The thru-hull is wayyy below the waterline! This is not what I expected! Aren't thru-hulls supposed to have hoses looped and then the actual thru-hull above the waterline?? I haven't traced it, but I believe this might be the sink/cooler drain. Anyone ever run into that? If so, this is really, really a bad spot for a thru-hull?Need your help, should I remove the thru-hull, patch it up and put in a new thru-hull? I did take pics (hoping they'll show what I see.)Best Regards,Mark

My 23 has the sink/cooler drain in this location. I will remove it the next time I have the boat out of the water.

Through - hull fittings

On most boats there are through hull fittings below the water line. In fact the most common cause of sinking of pleasure boats if from failed through hulls.They are not unsafe if maintained correctly. On the other hand, if you don't need it it can't hurt to seal it. You will need to glass over it, not just fill it with putty or you risk popping the plug out.If it were my boat I would make sure there's a good seacock on it and leave it in place.Justin - O'day Owners' Web

I have the same 23 configuration and agree with the earlier posts. The thru hull is a 3/4" plastic, just where yours is, and is plumbed to the sink and cooler drains...with no seacock! I agree with Justin, and I am headed to the marine store for a seacock.I do have a second thru-hull fitting...it is a knotmeter in front of the keel. Since it is not plumbed, but is thru-hull hardware screwed in place with a solid base, I am a lot less concerned with it.Good luck on your restoration.
