Hi all, Hope you're all doing great! Hey, for all the O'day 23 owners out there, question for ya : Thru-hull. I'm restoring an O'Day 23 pop-top and I didn't see any thru-hulls anywhere on the boat....until this weekend, while in the process of removing old bottom paint, I found a thru-hull located amidships, port side and about 2' up from the keel. The thru-hull is wayyy below the waterline! This is not what I expected! Aren't thru-hulls supposed to have hoses looped and then the actual thru-hull above the waterline?? I haven't traced it, but I believe this might be the sink/cooler drain. Anyone ever run into that? If so, this is really, really a bad spot for a thru-hull? Need your help, should I remove the thru-hull, patch it up and put in a new thru-hull? I did take pics (hoping they'll show what I see.) Best Regards, Mark

Mark, Check the archives. I posted a message about this couple months ago. My sink drained very slowly. After several unsuccessful attempts to flush out, I realized that it drained via a thru hull below waterline. I was shocked to see this, as if a hose clamp, ball valve, or hose failed, your boat sinks. I was told that thru hulls above waterline leave ugly stains on your hull. I think I'd prefer a stained hull to arriving at my boat to see a mast sticking out of the water. For now, I'll leave mine alone and just check the fittings regularly. If you have a brass ball valve, you might consider replacing it with a sea cock. They are more substantial and less likely to fail. Good luck

Hello Mark, I have the same thru hull on my 23. It seems to be in the same placement below the water line. The drain lines come from both the sink and the cooler box and are t-'d at the thru hull. I had to replace mine because it appeared to be plastic and cracked. I replaced with a bronze thru hull of the same size and added a ball valve to the inside to be able to close should I need to make repairs anywhere. I added drain lines from the two back galley compartments to help in rinsing them out. All and all the drain works ok, but slow sometimes. I just learned to be patient and don't expect a flush to happen. The lowest level of the cooler box is almost at the waterline without any valve added. I also thought I should have it come out higher, but then it would create a problem of draining. I was thinking of becoming more creative with a pump but then the cost and complication later on was not justified. If I had to make a suggestion it would be to make the thru hull just a bit larger, use bronze, and add a ball valve and it should take care of all your needs. From the ball valve to the sink and the cooler you can get as creative as you like making sure everything can drain good in the winter to prevent freezing. It is a tight squeeze to get it all in so keep in mind when buying thru hull and ball valve. Hope this helps in some way. James

It such a tight fit in there too! I can see this is going to be an entertaining job *laughing* Gary, you worded that soo well and I agree, I'd much rather have to contend with a stain on the hull due to a thru-hull than one day going to the boat and having a mast sticking out of the water! Sounds like this was a common set-up on O'Day's hmm? You guys have drains for your anchor locker? Mine doesn't. Mark

Looks smiliar to mine
Looks similar to mine, a 72 poptop, except I have a shut off valve, and keep it in the off position all the time. I only open it to exercise the valve as Ido not use the ice box for ice, but for storing junk.
