oday 23 outboard motor

I need to replace the 8.5hp evinrude outboard on my '83 oday. will I be underpowered if I get a 6hp Johnson?? Any thoughts an a good source for a new motor?Thanks

Common Topic - Consider your water

Outboard motor size and 2 or 4 stroke has been a common topic on this forum. I have seen everything from a 6hp to a 15hp (max size for standard bracket) advocated, but my observation is that most are between 8 and 10. I moved from a 8.5 to a 9.9, because I return to port against the current in my area. The 9.9 Mercury gets me to hull speed at 3/4 throttle and works great.

I would be careful with the size of your next motor as the bracket may only be able to handle a 2 stroke motor . I downsized from a 9.9 to 8,0 on our 26 and have no problems as were outlined above . However I should have spent the extra bucks and purchased a motor with an alternator to charge our battery. We rarely use the lights or any other below decks power but when you need it , it certainly comes in handy. I listened to my partner who was actually laying out the money so I felt I should not argue even though we arte 50/50 partners. Next time around we will look into our options more thouroughly.

Go Honda

I have a new 9.9 on my 23. The 8 and the 9.9 are the same motor with slightly different internals. There are distinct advantages to a 4 stroke, and Honda makes one of, if not the , best. 9.9 is more than my 23 needs, but it costs only slightly more, weights about the same as the 8, and has 20% more power. Supporting a 4 stroke is an issue that has been well discussed here. CVP
