Oday 23 Mast raising

Hello I just purchased an Oday 23 year 1985I would like to know if you raise the mast from the bow, how do you keep the mast from going over the rail since the side shrouds can not be attached as the mast goes up.Thank you for your help.

Raising the mast

I raise my maist from the stern. It takes two people but is not that tough to do. This way all the shrouds are accessable inside the cockpit of the boat. It takes about half an hour.

Raising the mast

I can easily raise the lower the mast on my O'day 22 by clipping a snatch block on the headstay fitting and running a 50 foot 7/16 dacron line from the turnbuckle on the headstay, back to my cockpit winch. You can easily lower the mast. To bring it back up have someone lift it past the horizontal then winch it up. You only need to disconnect the headstay. It helps to mark the turnbuckle so you can quickly tighten it to the right tension. It only takes a few minutes. You only need to take off the headstay, the other stays are fine tensioned as they are. I am assuming you have a pivot on your mast step.

the wife & i raise the mast from the bow, we do not disconect the side shrouds even while trailering. we use the winch. take us 3/4 of hour to ready boat to launch after arrival at slip.

Mast raising

The most important problem is keeping the mast in collumn as it's going up. Easiest way is to have boat at dock with halyards in hand port and starboard of boat to lift and stabilize as hearty sole lifts from on board. If short handed, use gin pole and stabilizing pole (I use spinnaker pole) to attach halyards to keep in collumn. Check out the site below.Marducci

Never had a problem..

Raising it on my 22. If you can't keep the sidestays on, then maybe they are too tight? You don't have to let them loose, just try loosening up the turnbuckles as much as you can. This should give you the play you need to lower and raise it, but still give you the stability to port and starboard.I do it by myself without any extra hands or tools. I raise it over the stern. If you aren't afraid of a little effort, you can do the same. Instead of using the pole contraption I just use myself instead. Place your foot against the base of the mast to give you some leverage, and with the back stay in place and the side stays slack enough to give you the room you need to bring it up, pull it up with the forestay. I also shove it up from behind sometimes, but this takes some fancy footwork to get out of the cockpit and onto the cabin roof.Of course this isn't for everyone. If you don't have the weight to keep it in place and the strength to haul it up, you might want to go with a setup like Mardon showed a link for!Josh
