Oday 23 Mainsheet rigging

I have the loan of an Oday 23 for the summer, but all the rigging needs setting up.

I have all the standing rigging done, mast etc, but I am stumped looking at the running rigging for the boom, i.e. controlling the trim of the mainsail.

Looking at it it would seem the line would run from the left (port) cockpit blocks, up to the boom, and down to the right (starboard) blocks, with it cleated on the left/port side.

However, when I try this, it seems that I am a pulley missing as I'd need 3 on the boom, and there are only two.

Any ideas.. or even better, a detailed photo of the Oday 23 mainsheet rigging?

Not sure what you mean by cockpit blocks? Mine is like the second photo, connecting onto the backstay. There is a triangular plate on the backstay and the block connects directly to the plate. The other block connects at the end of the boom. The sheet pulls downward.

My 23 also has the mainsheet attached to the block on the backstay. I would think that's where yours would go too unless the owner installed a traveler. Then it would go somewhere in the cockpit like the first picture shows. Some pictures of the cockpit and backstay would help!

Yikes! That does make it difficult. I don't think any 23's came from the factory with split backstays, so it might be a "custom" job by a PO to make it "adjustible" for racing. If the blocks are out on the rails, they could be for a spinnaker and have nothing to do with the mainsheet....(just a thought)

Does it look like it should be rigged like this Bristol? I was looking at alternatives to mine and Trinkka suggested that this might be a way to do it. I see two sheaves on the block connected to the boom.

I'll have to take some pics of the three Bristols in our YC mooring field when I get a chance and post them for you. We have four different Bristols in our club and one of our members decided to work on his and not launch it this year. Also, one of our newest members who sails a Bayliner Buccaneer, bought an old Bristol last year and has it in his yard working on it from time to time. If he ever decides to put it in the water some day, we'll have a total of five Bristols out in our mooring field. They are a popular sailboat in our area.

Indy, the 1st picture appears to be a smaller boat than your 23. My guess (from my experience with a 17' Daysailer years ago) is that the mainsheet comes down to a swivel block. Think of a fiddle block with a cam cleat on a "stand" rather than a traveler track or the backstay. The 2d picture does indicate mainsheet attachment to the backstay, but I've seen several captains on these pages express dislike for that arrangement. Finally, the 3rd picture appears to have the mainsheet block attached to either the pushpit or perhaps a block secured to the transom. Although it's not aligned with the boat's center line, it does make for convenient sail adjustment.
If yours is end-boom sheeting, you only need two blocks (pulleys)....one on the end of the boom and one secured to the boat (pushpit, swivel block, or traveler). I don't know what sort of purchase you would need for a 23', but 4:1 should be more than enough.
