O'Day 23 Jib

This spring I purchased a '80 O'day 23. After sailing it a few times I was unhappy with the way the bow pulpit and lifelines interfered with jib. Yesterday I noticed the jib lacked about 2ft. from its head to the top of the forestay at the mast. I added a 14in. pendant to raise the foot of the sail above the lifelines and pulpit. This made a great deal of difference in the sail shape. I did have to sheet the jib through the genoa blocks, but, by moving the cars forward I was able to get the proper sail shape. An added benefit was that, according to the main sail tell tales, airflow over the main was more efficient as well. The questions are- 1) Are there any unforseen problems with continuing to do this? 2) Was this the way O'day intended the jib to be rigged? Thanks for your input.

I have done the same

I don't know the designer's intensions, but I too have added a pendant on my O'Day 27 so the jib doesn't sweep the foredeck.It raises the jib higher and should catch better wind but it also raises the center of effort so you might heel a tad bit more.It just makes me want to sing... "I can see clearly now (the sails have lifted). I can see all obsticles in my way..."Sincerely,Capt. Jim

What a coincidence

I have an 80 O'day 23' and have pondered that same question. Most recently have been looking to add a genoa to my sail inventory and was concerned that it would not set properly over the pulpit and lifelines. I'm curious to know what the best length for the pendant should be. Has anyone else delt with this?
