O'Day 23 Halyards

My boat is in drydock for the winter and the mast is down. I'd like to replace the halyards in the spring. While sailing, when I raised the main and wanted to winch it down, the steel cable of the halyard had to be wrapped around the winch. Is this normal or does this mean that the steel cable of the halyard was too long? When purchasing new halyards should I purchase one with a shorter steel cable? It does seem though that if I purchase new halyards w/ a shorter steel cable that the transition between the steel & the rope will be passing over the pulley at the masthead when the sail is brought down and I'm not too sure that's ok either. I guess the main question is; Does anyone know the factory recommended halyard lengths, for both main sail & jibs, that will tell the correct length of steel cable needed for each halyard? Any good websites to purchase these halyards? I'd hate to go to West Marine and get raped.

Halyards

I don't have the halyard lengths handy but I do have a question - why did the main need to be winched down? On your boat it ought to fall on its own or will minor hand pulling. If you need a winch to get it down you have another issue. Were you dead up wind at the time? Is the mast track clean. I'd spend some time cleaning and the lubing the mast track with one of the new dry lubricants. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Check w/ Rudy

Rudy now has halyards for a number of boats listed, including the 23. He lists the maninhalyard w/ shackle for $39. Look under "Running Rigging". Brad

Bought one this fall

Neil, I agree with Brad - Check out Rudy's web site. I bought a new main and jib halyards this fall and will replace them this spring when it warm enough to be outside working on boat. The halyard's I bought are both 100% "rope" there is no steel wire for the 23. Rudy has all the dimensions and since it all "rope" then the extra is not a problem and you do not need to worry about extra - Personally I am hoping that there is enough to think about leading them back to the cockpit - but thats another project. Rudy's prices are great and he is the "one" who has all those little things you need for the boat but cannot find anywhere. I also agree with Justin - I am perplexed by your comments about winching the sail down - I do not have a winch on my 23 to raise the halyards. The main and jib both run up and down very easily - so I am also confused by your comment about winching the sail down. Hope this helps. All the best and good luck

Yeah Rudy

I bought new from Rudy for both my main and jib. I bought hardware to run all aft and told him I wanted to get halyards of proper length. I hope to put it all together this spring but suspect Rudy knows right length. From dealing so far with Rudy I also assume that if they aren't right he'd make them right. Mine are also now all rope and the shackles were already spliced by Rudy. Good luck, Mike
