Does anyone have experience with these two boats. Could you please tell me how they differ as far as sailing feel and performance is concerned. Thankyou. Lance.

Hello Joe - Thankyou for your answer to my post.
I am currently sailing a very nice O'Day 23 in the shallow waters of SW Florida. I have been very happy with the boat but would like something larger and like you, I love a simple boat. I have been looking at a 1986 tiller steered, outboard 272. I love the interiors also. I have to have a shallow draft boat to get into my slip. I guess my specific concern was if I would be taking a step backward with the wing keel as far as the over all sailing feel? Anyway Joe, I also want you to know that I am a regular reader of your posts and appreciate the fact that you do what you can to help others. I hope you and your pup have a good sailing and fishing summer.

I mean no disrespect to anyone who owns the older O'Day 23s with a cast iron keel, or to the people who own the 272 O'Day models with wing keels, but I've heard one guy tell me that he started out with the O'Day 25 keel centerboard and went on to a larger boat and wished that he had stuck with the O'Day 25. Some of his most memorable and fun times were spent on the smaller boat. I've learned to be happy with what I have. My wife doesn't like sailing anymore. She got all cruised out years ago, and is happy just to stay home and watch our grandchildren a few times a week. My other First Mate was a black brindle Pit Bull German Shepherd mix named Ziggy, and she sailed with me for 11 years. My new First Mate Penelope Pitbull, is a blue brindle Pit Bull/Greyhound mix, and she loves sailing and kayaking. So, I look at it this way; My wife won't let me have a girl friend, and if I continue to just sail with my dog, why would I need anything larger than what I have? A friend of mine wanted to give me his 1975 O'Day 25 about 5 years ago. I know for a fact that he paid over $5000 for it. I had sailed his boat a few times and It was a great boat. I would have loved to have it, but I just didn't want a larger boat than what I have now. To make a long story short, I found him a guy in our club who would take the boat off his hands and I delivered the boat from the Cape Cod Canal area to the club in Dighton Ma. on the Taunton River for him. The guy kept the boat for the rest of that year and turned around and sold it to his wife's cousin. Then he went out and bought a 34' Silverton and put that up for sale the very next year. Go figure!
