Oday 23 cabin cushions

When I purchased my O-23, the cabin cushions were gone. The project (one of several) this spring to to make new cushions. My question is, how thick is the foam on the originals? Is there different foam thickness for the cabin vs v-berth vs bolsters, etc.? I have to know the thickness before I sew the cushions.Thanks,Ric

I just tossed my oday 23 cushions. They were pretty ratty. The foam rubber on all cusions was about 5 - 6" thick.Good luck.

Cabin Cushions

Ric, we replaced the V-berth cushions on our '71 Pop-Up that we acquired last year. I purchased 4" thick foam on line, and we cut them ourselves using an electric knife and the old ones for a pattern. 4" is plenty when it comes to turning over while sleeping, that is, when the top is down. Any thicker and we wouldn't be able to turn over. (Last weekend we added a sleeping bag under the sheets, and we hit the top!)The settee cushions are still the originals. However, the bench cushions are pretty well flattened and need to be updated for comfort.We used the old V-Berth cushions for padding for the mast while trailering CCDEBGO to her new home.

2 inch foam is all

Ric, I have a 1973 O'day 23 with old cushions. The foam thickness is only 2 inches. I would think that any foam much thicker than that would be difficult to sit on and would feel as if you were being sucked into a bog. More important than the thickness would be the density or compression factor of the foam. Not that it would feel good, but some 1/2 inch foam could provide as much bounce as persay 3 inch foam. I would also consider a foam that would not absorb water. I think they are called closed cell. There are modern foams available today that have more compression/density and the ability to stay dryer than when my boat was built. I am sure a 2 inch foam would look great and you would be able to get out of the v-birth or setee in a hurry if need be.

Ric:I noted that one O'Day owner indicated that he replaced the cabin cushions in his boat and the foam was 5" to 6" thick. I suspect the cushions he replaced were not the original as O'Day did not put cushions that thick in any of the O'Day 23 boats. However, I do agree with one writer who suggested that you go with foam that is at least 4" thick. You should be aware that the foam is very expensive, but if you intend to do any significant overnight cruises you will be most sorry if you use only 2" thick foam.As you must install new cushions, it would be wise not to attempt to duplicate the original.
