O'day 23-2 winches again

Based on some feedback here, I am thinking of replacing my sheet winches. Currently I have Barlow 16's. I am trying to figure out what other winches (current or used) that would be similar power ratio and load rating. Does anyone know where I can get this information for the common brands (Barient, Lewmar, Harken, Anderson, Enkes, Merriman, etc.)? Anyone have a specific recommendation or caution? Not planning on getting 2-speed or even self tailer's at this point.

Thanks.

I can't answer any of your questions, really, but from what I read around here, getting self-tailing winches is worth it...

Interesting question ..... There are a couple of reasonable web sites which describe the math behind a winch ....

http://www.westmarine.com/WestAdvisor/Selecting-Sailing-Winches

http://www.harken.com/article.aspx?id=12821

But if you want the details then check out the specs/manuals for the specific winch. Harken manual spell it out precisely - see these 2 sites.

Hope these help.

Single speed 8 is what I would suggest. 2 speed would be overkill, unless you got a super deal. Lewmar, Harken, Andersen. Any brand that is still in production

For an O'day 23???

Lewmar 16. Single speed non-tailing.

You can go ST if you please, but anything bigger or with more speeds is total overkill.

Call around to local boat yards and see if they have any small single speed winches laying around. In a set. If yes you will save big dollars.
