I'm looking at a 1986 222 this afternoon. Anybody know how many years they made this boat? There doesn't seem to be many of them around and few comments appear in this forum. The one review I read at this website was very good. Anyone have any comment about the 222? Thanks Mike

222

I have a 22. I assume the 222 was the followup. They look pretty nice, and there are quite a few owners in that section of the forum. I can't help you much with details, though, having never seen one, myself...

222

Mike - I haven't sailed a 222, but there is a guy with one in the anchorage I keep my boat in. He speaks highly of it. I've seen him on the bay and the boats looks like it sails well. I probably wouldn't like to go outside sheltered water in it, but that may not be an issue for your intended use. Are you going to get a seatrial in the boat you're intersted in? How about having it surveyed? Both are good ideas if you can swing it. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Owned one for 11+ years

I bought a 1984 222 brand new and sailed it on the Barnegat bay for over 11 years, with numerous trailer trips to Lake George, Lake Champlain, and various other places. Great boat, seemed to be very good quality construction. Very stable and predictable handeling. In the last several years I flew a cruising spinnaker, even while single handing. Sold the boat thinking I'd enjoy powerboating instead. That laset two years and I now own a Hunter 29.5 that I keep on the Chesapeake at Rock HAll, Md. Good luck if you do buy it!

222

Took a look at that 222 and it appears to be in very good condition overall. I haven't seen it out of the water yet that may be this weekend. The only problem is with the rubber guard around the edge of the boat, it's loose. Upon further inspection it looks as though the piece that the rubber fits into needs to be replace. This is screwed to the boat with the rubber piece fitting into groves that forms the bumper system. This seems to be a continuous piece around the boat. Does anyone know how hard this is to replace and where I can find these parts? Mike

222 a real sailer

If you want simple cruising, get a 222. My wife and I cruised all over lake michigan and the north channel for 10 years, often with another couple aboard. The 222 is a great sailer, easy to trailer and launch, and can handle a blow. But you have to be close friends. We now have a 272 so we can take our 5 gradsons sailing.go for it.

Bought it

We're pulling it out of the water this weekend and if there are no surprises on the bottom I'm getting the boat. I don't know if it was just this boat or if all Oday are like this but it in very good condition above the water like. Thanks everyone for the comments. Mike

O'Day 222

I just bought an 86 O'Day 222. Haven't even got it in the water but seems to be a very well made boat. Was looking at Catalina 222 and this is much nicer.

O'Day 22

I have an O'Day22, I think the only changes were slightly larger sail area and cabin windows. I've sailed 2 years on Buzzards Bay, even my wife loves it. For parts call Rudy Nickerson at D&R Marine, Assonet, MA

O'Day 222 - Excellent

I've owned a 222 since 1986 (bought it new). Only 131 were made. I've always loved the boat. It is very balanced under sail, can handle getting the gunn'l in the water and leaving it there (very stable), and it has lots of room below compared to other 22 footers. It's looks are well above average (lots of teak) and after 15 years, my boat looks new in many respects - it holds up well. I've never bottom painted - and the hull looks like it did the day I bought it. I highly recommend the 222 for those seeking a great sailing weekender. A shoal draft (20") and being easily trailerable make the boat very versatile.
